Yeah man, it's such good writing to just state they're equals in the last thirty seconds of the show after 80 episodes of one always crushing the other and with the obvious implication that the results are going to be the same once again immediately afterwards.

You're giving the writing too much credit, what you said was only really true for Rola's first couple losses when she got really upset. Afterwards she allegedly became more mature from going on her journey of self-discovery and yet went on to still lose like a chump in the S4 selection simply because her beating the MC at that point wouldn't be possible for the plot to work. Yume was definitely a Mary Sue, but more due to the rainbow than her personality (or lack thereof in S2). Talk shit about Honey Cat all you want, but at least it made sense in the context of the show whenever they lost to Pure Palette (due to PP valuing their fans more and deriving their strenght from the fans' support) and they were even allowed to beat them in an important competition once.

If anything, I can respect Stars S2 for the way they handled the final tournament despite mostly everything else being a mess. Despite Elza being overwhelmingly superior for the whole season, they set her character up so that it would only make sense for her to lose. Not much was done to make you care about Yume's own stakes in the matter, but her winning there didn't feel merely like plot convenience.

I would agree with you if we looked at S1 on its own, but S2 made her loss entirely meaningless and she might as well have just defeated Hime there for all that came out of their promised rematch.
