I think Asta works because of two reasons specifically, and those are that as much as he's supposed to be the protagonist and main character, he isn't carrying the plot on his own and BC is largely an ensemble cast kind of thing where he's the glue holding the bunch together, and that his relationship with Yuno isn't edgy rivalry but friendship.

Pretty much this. The black bulls are such a fun secondary cast that Asta is just a singular part of a larger story, and it's difficult to dislike him in that context. Most people who hate Asta probably dropped the series within a couple chapters/episodes because he doesn't hold up well when the entire spotlight is just on him.

It seems odd to me that when people do these comparison memes it's always Asta contrasted with Deku when I feel like a much better comparison would be Asta vs Touma.
