If Naruto is gateway anime of the worst kind, what is an example of gateway of the best kind?

What’s the point of Code Geass as a gateway? Why show them the bottom of the barrel first?

Personally I have found success using Mob Psycho 100 to convert people to anime.

A gateway of the best kind is sort of an oxymoron. A gateway is something that has broad appeal, so that someone might watch and enjoy despite "not being into" that kind of thing. Naturally, the best kinds of anime do not have broad appeal.

I like snk a lot but i'd say it's a solid gateway show for people who already have a general idea of what anime is.
SNK got me to watch shit weekly as it came out for the first time, which later got me into watching seasonal anime.
Before then i just saw what was on tv or just watched entire shows on streaming sites.

For anyone new nowdays I'll say watching Japan animator expo is the best choice. They have every genre under the sun and some of the best examples of each said ganre; comedy, action, mecha, romance, oldschool, scifi... they have it all. You find the stuff you like and look for similar things, you can also look into directors and inbetweeners and the people who worked on the films you liked and watch their other works.

Naruto managed to stay consistently good for at least 250 chapters (i.e. pre-shippuden), and arguably good up until 500 (i.e. the start of the war). That's more than what 99% of current shonens can ever hope to achieve.
