The more languages you say you know, the more likely it is that your understanding of most of them is just surface level. And even if you do truly know them all, and invest a large portion of your time into upkeep as you read medical journals in each language every week, it's still time that you could probably be using better elsewhere if you were actually smart.

I'm reading several series that are translated the day they come out (I don't think everyone needs to do this but more than a few days and it starts to be a problem for me) and it does annoy me that at least one of the other series I'm reading takes weeks if not more than 1 month (and this is a monthly series) for a new chapter to be translated. I'm still glad it's being translated but me telling the group they're slow pieces of shit shouldn't affect them so personally when they do release fairly slowly.

The biggest hurdle simply are the kanji and the fact that each kanji consists of 3 parts: strokes (symbol), meaning, "spelling" (many of have multiple).

Japanese was until recently considered an isolate language (and it pretty much is since it lost its isolate status by counting Okinawan as a separate but related language), Korean still is. It's nowhere near as similar to Mandarin/Korean as you're suggesting.

You can be "fluent" in spoken Japanese with like 5k vocab, it's a very simple language. It's also not really fluency, being able to manage day to day shit and talk about the weather isn't actually useful for anything but tourism.

If you want any real understanding of Japanese, you need kanji. And they only take a couple of months to learn.

I don't know where you heard this 98% thing, but that other guy is right, it's about kanji. If you know joyo, you know 98% of the kanji you'll encounter in terms of FREQUENCY. The total number you'll encounter over your life is probably about 3k, but that doesn't really matter right now.

2k vocab is nothing. It's about 75% in terms of frequency in newspapers, while core 6k is 98%. If you read anything else, those figures drop down to maybe 60% and 90% in ideal circumstances, and much lower if you're reading some medieval fantasy LN.

20k vocab is what's considered a realistic native level for someone who doesn't read anything but magazines. 30k is what you should be aiming for if you're interested in literature or college graduate level Japanese.

True. But what really matters most for a work isn't how it was written, it isn't even the true feeling of the author, it's the way it's interpreted.

You may very well get a sense of the meal, but it's a decidedly second-hand experience, forever marked by the translator in indelible ink. The question isn't copy vs nothing, it's copy vs the original. People just make their own excuses to pretend that the copy is the only choice they have, which is tremendously sad.

Now, you could go further and say that if no translations ever existed, then you might reduce the number of people who would potentially be inspired by one translation and go on to learn the language and read the originals of many other works. The ugly reality is that most people are too stupid to learn a second language very well once they're beyond their teens, and the majority of the ones who try will end up with a shitty grasp of Japanese but will still pretend they know the language because their egos would collapse if they couldn't hold it up as an accomplishment and had to confront the fact that they've wasted so much time on something they'll never be good at. I don't see why you would want there to be more people like that out there unless you're one of them too.

Good translation don't get feedback because a high quality is what you expect. People only start to voice their opinions once something doesn't match their expecatations. So the feedback you get is negative, and the only positive feedback you'll ever receive is the amount of views/downlaods

unfortunately, this guy is right. if you actually knew the language, you are already translating them automatically in your head as you listen. it's 2nd year japanese class learners who have to guess what is being spoken, look it up in a dictionary, or search for written kanji that makes shit so long

Translators are always a tiny proportion of language learners. People with no other skills, people with too much pride, they aren't important.

While I'm sure there are a reasonable number of people who fail to reach a reasonable level in a second language, they'd fail with or without translations.

Without translations from this point on, more people would learn a language to true fluency. I doubt anyone could argue against that point. Without translations, less people will experience any given work.

My point of view is that it's better for the few to have a more complete experience than it is for the many to have a bastardised version. And with the rise of the machines, the number of learners will certainly decrease. As a mild positive, machine translations might improve teaching tools, so the few that do learn might become more proficient faster, but it's not going to outweigh the number of people who wind up never bothering because "everything is translated anyway", when they might well have bothered if something they wanted to read wasn't getting translated.

I do admit that my example of something vs nothing was a bit of an overexaggeration.
People can and should learn languages. I've learned english and it has opened up a whole new world to me and I'm also learning japanese for the exact reasons that you stated, I want to get closer to the origin.

For the sake of my argument, let's keep with my Artwork analogy. The mona lisa for example can be seen by the public without too many restrictions, and as I live pretty close to france, I have seen it from close up. But you have to consider, not everyone lives right next to france, a journey to france just to see the mona lisa might not be practically possible for many people due to time and or monetary constraints. Even factoring in all the other culturally and historically significant structures (-1) and works that are worth seeing, it just might not be feasable for many people to take this journey.

Maybe I should have clarified. Translating machines would free up time for everyone. If it only takes but a fraction of a second to what it normally takes for humans translators to translate it means there's quite a lot of time that has been freed than can now be spent for alternative uses.

Anyone can learn any language at any given point in time. The difference is that a full time employee has a hardtime finding the motivation to not only cram an hour of vocabulary a day, but also consume content in a foreign language that they barely manage to understand. It's mentally taxing so they lose drive and motivation after a month or two. The only reason you're unable to understand that is because you're either autistic or have never tried to learn a new language from scratch while working fulltime and community 1-2hrs each day. If all you can get yourself to do are 30minutes per day, then you'll be progressing so slowly that you'll lose motivation, too. Learning a langauge is easy while you're a NEET or in college. You have both time and stamina to do so.

I'm sure it's the same for languages. Learning a language allows you to see the world through a new lense, it allows you to see it from new angles, it might even reveal things that you haven't been able to notice before.
Pretty much anyone will agree with this view. But no matter how many new perspectives you'll be able to see the world from, if you can't justify the enormous time (and in cases monetary) effort that comes with learning a language, there's no way for you to appreciate their Literature.
And of course you can argue that it's their own fault, that they are making excuses. but think for just a few moments. what are you making excuses about? I'm sure you aren't perfect.
Nothing man made can be perfect, nothing that exists is perfect. Perfection is by definition unattainable.

People who have the ability to learn another language that late in their life are more than smart enough to take the initiative and do it on their own without prodding if it's worthwhile. All you're going to accomplish here by evangelizing is giving the stupider ones false hope.

Just because people might make excuses, just because people might be lazy we won't allow them at least a glimpse of what may await them in that other world?
I stand by my point, that translations are valuable, even if they are clouded, imperfect, biased, call it whatever you want. It makes something that was only barely accessible, easily accessible to many. even if that might be at the cost of meaning.
