There was plenty of garbage in the past too. But I suspect You mean to refer to the general pool of anime shows and how they changed in nature after some vague point in the late 1990's and early 2000's.

It's because consumers decreased buying anime videos to the point that the companies switched emphasis to selling related merchandise. The merchandise sales became the Tail-That-Wagged-The-Dog. Because of that, the anime story and plot became less important than having the plot support merchandise and license sales. The production committee members would even determine how much screen time each character gets in order to support license sales. Occasionally, characters would be required to have a certain pose in a scene because it would be used in advertising or for a standee. Or the anime characters are required to eat curry for one scene because there is an advertiser tie-in to sell curry. Clothing fashions are similar too.

Like it or not, the 10's are lacking the creative spark that came out of the post-Evangelion wave. Visually we are moving away from great cinematography and more towards a focus of higher quality animation. Background art is getting worse and post processing effects to emulate real life/film make the image look greasy and blurry.

I like 2010's anime, but where are the must watches? I'm reminded of the early 90's pre-Evangelion right when the Japanese economy crashed, lots of safe pandering and only an occasional great production saving the season.

But isn't there something to say when one Era's good shows are better than another and that Era has more good shows on average?

Are you fucking retarded? Anime video sales SKYROCKETED during that period, look at the any list of pre-00 and post-00 sales and you'll see the difference. The chart you just posted literally doesn't even show anything before the 00s.

this sentiment is a holdover from the 00's when people lamented that anime wasn't the exact same as they experienced on Toonami. That age is over, we can admit now that the oversaturation of anime has inundated us with shit pandering schlock and that there are way few "must watch classics" now than there were in the 00's.

Saying "old anime was better" just tells us you were never around when old anime was airing, or you'd remember that it had just as much of a ratio of good to bad. You wouldn't know since the only old anime you know of are the ones that stood the test of time.
