Both works really do seem to have similar themes, both visually and story-wise.
They are both about getting along with hopelessness, in SSR the potatoes have eachother, in stalker the stalker has the zone.
Plus the aesthetic does give of a similar post-apocalyptic, run down, natural atmosphere.

in Stalker, the human creations have been reclaimed by the nature within the zone, where as in SSR Human Creation has completely conquered Nature to the point where the last, truly natural remaining lifeforms are humans themselves

Its a character piece.
People who haven't seen it might think its about the mystery of the Zone, some sort of proto-SCP kind of deal, when its the exploration our 3 characters(Stalker, Writer and Professor) and their motivations.
Same goes for Solaris, the Sci-Fi is the backdrop through which to explore the human mind and iteration.
Now Mirror was a complete cluster of imagery.
Nukos will have several billions upon billions tons of concrete left as a reminder of Humanity.
They said themselves, "they are about to enter a cycle of hibernation".
To reclaim Earth from us would be to create the perfect environment for themselves, where as hibernation only happens as a result when the environment no longer can provide sustenance

the Zone is supposed to be an alien visitation site for what it matters and is pretty much the opposite of nature since physics doesn't work as it should

Stalker is I believe more about the Soviet Union and unknown unknowns surrounding it, the paradoxical zeitgeist of soviet russians where nothing was true but everything was which then led to the union's collapse, a surprise to everyone

In both Stalker and SSR, the world is secondary, the main themes are the journeys of the main characters, in the USSR people felt trapped and opressed, this manifests itself as the Stalker wanting to escape to the zone away from his real life
In modern day Japan, many people slave their lives away in a terrible work culture, people have the internet, which we thought would bring people together, but now everyone is more alone then ever, a very larg percentage of the japanese aren't in any relationship and maybe never will. In SSR despite the hopelessness of the situation, tha potatoes have eachother and that's what matter the most, tsukumizu even said in one of the afterwords, that they envy the girls and their relationship.
Basically art is just the way people cope with their shitty lives, that's my two cents on the matter.

I think the Writer stands for the Soviet ideologue who was to both push socialism and later on critique it, which is why he is this very bourgeois character, as a critique on socialist ideologues.

The Stalker is the average USSR citizen who's utterly confused
The military blockade is the iron curtain
within it everything is grey, it signifies stagnation.

Think with me here, a lot of these ideas are unpolished. I'm actually doing a school project on this movie and it's ties to real life culture.

What is the zone? Is it reality, as to why it's so colourful? It's the complex reality in which nothing is clear and the intelligentsia are powerless. The socialist citizen understands it but can only work around it, because of it's perilous nature.

I think the interesting thing about Andrei Rublev in relation to Stalker is that, at the very end of a film about a man trying to paint the world of God, his works are presented in colour after the bell is complete (the entire film was very purposefully in black and white, when it could have been shot in colour).

I think the colour of the zone is the world and soul of God, which Andrei Tarkovsky is trying to paint. This includes the memories and emotions of his life presented as a jumbled mess.

It was a surprise to everyone.
It was unprecedented that it would fall and everyone alive at that time matches this idea.

Stalker was more incorporeal in it's message. It is this idea of the paradox of modern reality when tried to be grasped by humans, the thinking, the calculating and the spectating.

Space Odyssey was indeed very good but it's message was computerisation of everything, and humanity's final limit. This is a very western concern. The Soviets were more concerned with their outdated system that was too big to fail.

Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryouko is in it's premise very basic. i love it to death but you really can't compare it, since it has a basic message of anti-industrialism and how that affects human interaction

I believe that the unknown complexities of the world and the soul of God have the same connotations, that is that physics try to bend it and writers are powerless in it, while spectators who are exposed to it, trying to escape from their black-white reality, only end up getting torn apart like a monkey would.

The phone call professor received/made implied that he was discredited or denounced.
As I said, I believe Stalker is a character piece and the key to the movie is the dialogue and interaction between the characters first, and with the interaction of the party with the zone second.
You can draw whatever symbolism from the rest of the film any way you want.
You could just as well say that the way how Prof and Stalker had Writer be the one to go into the Meatgrinder signify Soviet Unions near complete disregard for culture in place of Science and the Working class.
or claim that the urbanized part of the film was gray while Zone was green(colorful) signified that the only real way to escape Soviet Bureaucracy was to go into the nature, away from the urban centers, where you could have brief breather.

Solaris is good, but don’t make the mistake that Lem made and compare it to the film. It is comparable, yes, but it has a completely different focus; the mysterious alien identity something pushed to the back, and present in the subtext of the presence of God.

I think it really is about how the complexities of the world are fought by the bureaucracy/military and how when it comes down to it, reality is incredibly complex despite seeming absolutely normal to the average viewer until they inspect it more closely.
It is a supernatural experience and how the physician, the writer and the average man deal with it.
I have forgotten some of the character interactions so i'll have to rewatch it.

You can see the Arkady and Boris influence very much in the soviet aspects of Stalker, though Tarkovsky himself does depict a lot of his own suffering within the period in the rest of his films.

When I compare SSR and Stalker, I'm doing so on more of a simple human level, I think both of them stem from the negative emotions their autors feel towards the environment/society they live in, and trying to cope with them, of course you are right that they are different in many ways and they deal with different issues, what I'm trying to say is that they both evoke similar emotions.
Also as far as the atmosphere is concerned, while the zone might be very green and the city of SSR might be mostly concrete, they both have no humans living in them, other than our protagonists (the map guy and plane girl almost certainly die, and sadly our potatoes as well), I don't count the robots, but I guess you could make an argument about what couns as life and what doesn't, I also view the nukos as a force of nature, more so than animals. This emptiness is what makes them similar in my eyes.

Given how literal the title with SSR was, it wouldn't surprise me if SS was really a simulation, but I think you got the human machine war thing wrong, it was a regular war between humans, but by the time it started humans already had war robots, like the ones the girls find and acidentally activate.
People joining the simulation after being eaten is kind of grotesque, but I could see tkmiz writing something like that, however it only raises more questions, like how does that work and why is the simulation simulating school life etc. I guess it is still to early to speculate, I'm sure we'll get a satisfying explanation eventually. (And probably more depression)

Rewatching SSR right now and damn, the animation isn't very good, is it? Tkmiz' art deserved better.

I like the anime a lot, the VA and music certainly added a lot, but visually the manga is dedinitely superior, plus the manga has the whole story, while the anime doesn't have a proper conclusion.

The tkmiz ending animation was 10/10, and it was a bit better in the Blu-ray release but they used it sparingly.

Oh, I'm the same, even down to the ratings. The anime is comfortably in my top 10. But the animation quality really is inadequate. Most of the time it doesn't matter because there's not much movement, which is perfectly fine, but whenever something moves, it looks like it's animated at 6 fps tops - or worse yet, the jarringly bad cgi Kettenkrad.

The title could be literal, but mean something else. In the possibly-canon prequel, Shimeji's girlfriend talks about how she wishes that she was a shimeji mushroom, because shimejis grow so close together that she would never feel lonely. Since Shimeji returned to school she has made connections with at least two people (egg and teacher), and if the art from tkmiz's twitter is anything to go by, they might have around 4 people in their little friend group.

So, rather than being a computer simulation of Shimeji (the person), the title may mean that the characters form a living simulation of a shimeji (the mushroom) by forming a close group of friends. Though, that doesn't do as much to explain the surreal elements of the series as the purgatory/simulation theories. The premise will probably only really become clear as we learn more about exactly what shimeji's sister is working on.

And previous chapters have done things like this, where one of the panels just serves as the background for the entire page. Even though the series only really deviates from the standard 4koma layout by combining panels, tkmiz seems to take a very creative approach to paneling.

In one of the anthalogy comics they are shown as being in college, so they are probably in their late teens or early twenties, it's just hard to tell their age from appearance alone, because of tkmiz's style and also it never being mentioned in SSR itself. With that said SS takes place in high school i'm pretty sure and you can see Chii in said high school in a club, so I guess it's anyones guess as to what their actual age is, could also be different in SSR/SS/twitter art

I think the best thing about seeing them in a normal setting as opposed to in SSR is that they are living comfortable lives, not fighting for their survival.

However since they are two cute anime girls, it was inevitable that most people would see yuri in it, and the anthalogy comic straight up has them having sex, so I guess it's up to interpretation :/

Another thing is that because of the manga/anime artstyle it's difficult to judge whether they are asian or white from appearance alone, I mean obviously asians irl can't be blond and have blue eyes, but manga/anime doesn't seem to care about natural hair or eye colour. In the tkmiz one the sex is inside Chii's dream though, the explicit sex scene, that's just straight up hentai is not by tkmiz.

But reading the tkmiz chapter again, you are right that it does seem to line up perfectly with SS, and the final lines at the end make it sound like SS is just Chii's fantasy, that could be interesting I guess, but then it wouldn't make much sense as to why Chii would be a background character in her own dream.
The taters saw Shimeji-chan on one of the pictures, so maybe SS is Chii imagining her life a thousand years ago, and the reason SS is so surreal is that Chii doesn't know what life a thousand years ago (from her perspective) was like.

Yeah no kidding, that was honestly one of the most interesting parts of SSR's world, normally in a post-apocalyptic story it's about rebuilding civilisation, but SSR is about the very end, it's hinted that the taters were literally the last humans in history.
I guess you could also say that it was a post-post-apocalyptic story, we see there was a massive war that wiped out most of humanity, but some survived and even after such an event, more war followed as Chii noted along the big hole, and all the way up to the time when the girls were little kids and had to escape from the fighting, and in the end the only ones left were the taters, honestly it would be a pretty calming thought to have humanity end with something so nice as the taters, without more bloodshed and suffering, just taking a nap.

I personally found the whole idea of the world dying, including (if the city is anything to go by) almost all animal and plant life, to be a particularly sad idea. We've come so far as a species, I'd hate to see it end in such a miserable state of affairs.
The space program the girls came across gave me a bit of hope that humans had found a home on other planets, at least.
That's not to say the world in SSR didn't have a kind of serene beauty to it, I'd love to spend a few years wandering around it just to see what was left.

Perhaps I worded it badly, obviously the end of all life aside from the nukos that will just hybernate is very sad, and overall SSR was very sad, especially towards the end, with the final chapter being a real tear jerker. But here's the thing, SSR was never a story about things getting better, it was always about making the best of a bad situations, getting along with hopelessness if you will, and that the girls did, despite living in a post-post-apocalyptic world, they lived relatively happy lives and experienced many things, most imporantly they had eachother, what i meant with the end of manking being the taters being calming, is that in the end there was no violent chapter about them slowly starving to death, being forced into cannibalism, or turning on eachother in any way. In the very final chapter they say that getting to live was great, and that's what fills me with hope, not that things will get better (because they won't), but that we may get better at dealing with it all and as Yuu would say, getting along with hopelessness. Also the very final sentence, where Chii said they'll take a nap and figure it out later implyes to me that they have accepted their fate and they no longer have any regrets, and they can "take a nap" die in peace.

I don't see people surviving on another planets, I think the rocket was put there by tkmiz just to have the girls confronted with another machine from the past, to show what humans could once do, but now they are reduced to just trying to survive. The rocket seems like a rocket we have today ie one for science/exploration , not for colonising space.

Another point is that it was clear from the beginning, from the title, that this was their last tour, or even the last tour for all of mankind, survival was kind of impossible really, given the circumstances, plus death is inevitable for all of us. The girls weren't trying to save all of humanity, they were just living day to day, exploring, trying to live furfilling lives (at least to the capacity possible in their world) and ultimately, their goal was reaching the top level, and in the end they succeded, they didn't fail, in a very dark, melancholic and sad kind of way, the ending could be considered a "happy ending" considering the circumstances, realistically, they weren't gonna get anything better than this, having some magical mcguffin on the top level that somehow saved them, maybe a civilisation or something like that would have been stupid and very out of place for the work of tkmiz.

Probably, though I feel all those things are related to some extent. It's also sort of nice,not only does something like this put a design an artist really likes on paper, it's memorable for them and fans alike. By making an image of yourself for people to look at it becomes a bit easier to follow. Well, their art generally fits in one of three color schemes: heavily gray/desaturated tones, which give the drawing somewhat of a mechanical, neutral tone (especially seen in their building drawings); somber, reddish-black colours, like in that one, which feel slightly more gloomy/oppressing, and the ones like pic related with brighter colours (generally outdoors).

SSR has military imagery in it, the girls drive a kettenkrad and Yuu has a arisaka 38, the helmets they wear are ubviously inspired by real world helmets, Chii by a british helmet and Yuu by a german one, one of the symbols germany used was a black cross on a white background (used by the teutonic order) I think the symbol on Yuu's helmet is inspired by that, just with a little square added.

You know even before seeing this I wondered what a SSR vidya would be like, if it existed I'd play it of course, my guess would be an open world exploration game, probably something like a mix of journey and maybe a VN, but to be honest I don't think SSR would work well as a video game, if it stayed true to the world of SSR it would be empty and that would be boring, but if the added combat and other stuff like that, it wouldn't be SSR.

A really calm, slow paced exploration based co-op game with one player as Chito and the other as Yuu would be nice, maybe add a little survival but mostly have it focus around working together to go around the layers and learn about the world, mostly with visual storytelling. What does this mean?

A little open-world puzzle game with the potatoes providing commentary in their usual fashion. Lots of exploring and finding new things to fuck around with. Co-op mode which occasionally puts the players against each other when the girls disagree on something and lets the winner control what happens, like whether or not a book gets burned depending on who gets to it first.

Have you even watched the show? That's basically all they do.

That's a good point, an experience like that would have to be played with friends and even then it'd be easy to ruin the atmosphere and mood, despite how funny that situation sounds. Despite how comfy a game like that sounds I think in the end it's best that it doesn't exist. It would also become really easy for threads to fall apart with more crossboarder influence, and I don't want that at all
