Did I miss something in the first episode? I can't follow what the broader narrative of this story is supposed to be. I know there was a war involving many nations but I don't know who started it or why. I know it ended with a unification but I don't know who won it or why. I don't know who is in charge right now, what their primary motivations are, what sort of government they're running. That makes it kinda hard to infer what sort of person Free is or Ver is because a big part of their identity is their relationship to this new government: Free works for them, Ver is a rebel of sorts. I have no idea which one is more sympathetic because the nature of the government isn't explained or shown at all. The only thing I've gathered is that they made fairy soldiers illegal, which makes sense and seems like a typical thing for a government to do, and there's some kind of rebel/criminal organization trying to use fairy tech for... reasons.
If there's an ideological conflict going on it either flew way past me or it hasn't been shown or explained at all. This show does not have a lot going on in terms of character chemistry so intrigue and suspense are where it needs to generate interest, and it's really dropping the ball there as far as I can tell. I want to be interested in this setting but it's doing such a bad job at explaining itself.
Like this scene. Who the fuck is this guy? Why is he being inspected? By other soldiers? Who are they? Apparently they're related to Wolfran? For all their clumsy exposition-laden dialogue that shows these two know each other and served in the war it doesn't really explain anything.

Oh, so that's how it went. Looking at the map I was wondering how such a small country like Zesskia got to be at the help of the unified Eastald.
Timeline looks something like this:
UE 481 - War started
UE 487 - Many Fairy Soldiers enter commission, Free Underbar and Wolfran Row among them.Beevee Liskar too.
UE 491 - Free gets protected by Jet in battle near Dipre (where ep 2 takes place). Marlya Noel meets Veronica Thorn, who becomes her first friend.
UE 493 - "Fairy Village" Suna and forests surrounding it are burned down by Lay Dawn. Marlya and Ver are separated.
UE 495 - War ends by Cidal proposing having Zesskia's Emperor as a ruling figure for united region.(here I assume Cidal has enough military power to enforce this, but not to claim conquest victory). Wolfran leaves service only to find his old home destroyed and family killed.
UE 497 - Marlya is in Fanatica, she survived the Suna purge and found a place to live, but her current caretaker just died. (I assume s/he was one who taught her how to hunt and shoot)
UE 505 - Current events.

A really special original might steadly grow an audience, but in general adaptations will always have an advantage of viewership, even if its the same quality as an original in the same season. This show scraped together the attention it has simply because of the P.A. Works name.
Pleiades was an amazing original show, but was outposted by many worse shows. "It's just a Subaru commercial", "nu-Gainax is shit, no thanks", said people passing over it without even downloading the first episode.
I'm not saying quality isn't a factor in popularity, but its only a small part of the story.
