So you throw a few girls in love with the hero but you don't want to actually deal with it : having the hero choosing a girl means making chapters focused on their love, which means those that don't care about romance will complain, and those that hate the ship are going to throw a tantrum.
Just look at what happened to Harry Potter (not a manga, but still relevant) once Ginny was confirmed the winner.
