What's the best Studio Ghibli film and why is it pic related?
Based
It's Whisper of the Heart, but that's Miyazaki's best.
b'd and rp'd
Posting best Ghibli girl
witched and redbowed
No arguments here.
Porco Rosso is also the shit.
I like Laputa the best
Kiki is cool too though a second favorite
Just saw it.
Kind of boring.
But I guess it was kind of unique.
Which is a fairly accurate way to describe a lot of ghibli films.
If you had to recommend one Ghibli movie, which one would it be?
Probably
>Not watching blond Hafu time travel and trib her hafu dyke grandaughter.
no it's actually the grave of the fireflies or mononoke
Dont you know guys? Since Spirited Away won an oscar, even though it was a piss poor year for animation, it is the best anime of all time. This is not for discussion.
>won an oscar
not an argument
anything quality wise can win an oscar
Ocean Waves
the lack of a serious storyline suits the who ghibli aesthetic well
Although laputa castle in the sky is still my favourite
it's hard to decide, cstle of cagliostro, Laputa and Spirited Away are top contenders for me
Mononoke had the best character but overall suffered from various flaw, Nausicaa suffered plot-wise as well despite the really good setting
Grave of The Fireflies had some good imagery and did a good job depicting life during the war, but had terrible pacing
Kiki and Porco Rosso were good but they just didn't do enough in by book to be considered the best
oh shoot I screwed up and included non-Ghibli movies
>You will never live in a 1940-50ish europe like society where it is safe enough for a fourteen year old girl to go out to the world and make a living in a city
Why am I even alive?
The best Ghibli film is in the eye of the beholder.
Funny you should say that because it's a hell of a lot more serious than the book.
Animation Oscars are irrelevant since the judges openly admit to not watching any nominations in the category unless their kids drag them to the cinema. And nominations included suck timeless classics as Shark Tale and Boss Baby.
*such timeless classics
although the typo was appropriate
It's actually Tale of Princess Kaguya.
>Animation Oscars are irrelevant
Oscars are irrelevant.
as a matter of fact porco rosso is the best ghibli movie
Howls doesn't deserve all the hate it gets. Sure it's not as good Laputa or Mononoke, but it's still a nice and (beware buzzword triggering) comfy movie.
Porco Rosso
Anyone who puts Ponyo that low missed the point of the movie. It was explicitly made for little kids and runs entirely on little kid logic. It does not have the universal appeal of Totoro or Spirited Away, but for its specific niche it's pretty brilliant.
I didn't like Howl that much, but putting it next to the absolute disaster that was Earthsea is just wrong.
It's actually Whisper of the Heart, but Kiki is a great film.
The only overrated Ghibli is Howl though, and even then it's still good.
My favorite have always been mononoke, howls, and nausicaa
>tfw I didn't find Nausicaa to be that good
The setting is great and the OST is stellar, but other than that, it was somewhat boring. Does anyone else feel that way? It seems that Nausicaa receives endless praise even on Yea Forums and I'm not even trying to be contrarian.
Nausicaa is the only Ghibli movie I haven't watched, but I read the manga and it's really great.
WHERE MY PORCO BROS AT
Whisper of the Heart is pretty much a perfect film, I really like Porco Rosso and Princess Mononoke though.
Nausicaa is something that you fall in love with if you either watch it when you're young and it makes a huge impression on you, or if you're just a guy that's very aesthetically focused. If that's what you came for then Nausicaa is an absolute fucking feast.
Either Kiki or Kaze Tachinu. Memezaki knows his shit.
>watch it when you're young
>aesthetically focused
Yes to both of those. I've always liked the setting/world, especially the Sea of Corruption and insect designs, but never really found the story as compelling as other Ghibli films, even as a kid for some reason. Mononoke felt much more powerful.
Mononoke is basically a remake of Nausicaa, they're nearly the same story.
Nausicaa has a cooler and more unique aesthetic, Mononoke is superior in every other way.
>they're nearly the same story.
The themes are the same, the stories themselves aren't. I guess there's similarity in both leads being royalty from a relatively secluded land who undertake a dangerous journey.
What the fuck is this narrative about Howl's Moving Castle not being some of the best?
>both leads are royalty from a relatively secluded land
>beloved by their people
>relatively secluded land is exposed to danger because of conflict between other kingdoms
>leads have to go on a journey because of it
>this gets them involved in the conflict between foreign kingdoms
>said conflict is destroying nature in some way
>part way through lead meets opposite sex member that is heavily invested in the war
>antagonist tries to do something that will completely annihilate the local ecosystem, likely everyone involved
>lead and opposite sex member (now mellowed out by the lead) stop antagonist
>lead can now return to his land
I also think it's his best work.
Narrative as in a documentary that is dramatized but is still relaying the truth?
>>relatively secluded land is exposed to danger because of conflict between other kingdoms
This is not really Ashitaka's case. The conflict could've potentially spread to his village, but he traveled west to find a way to get rid of the curse.
>>lead can now return to his land
Ashitaka goes on to live in the ironworks with Eboshi and the other girls IIRC, he doesn't go back to his land.
Other than that, you're right.
>This is not really Ashitaka's case
It is. The curse beast that attacks his village is the boar that was corrupted because of the war all the way off in the ironworks.
>Ashitaka goes on to live in the ironworks
Oh yeah you're correct about that, my bad.
>girl
14 year old witch would be more appropriate. did you notice how none of the other girls her age were focused on making their own way yet. it appeared to be more of a sub-cultural tradition than an expectation.
also, a witch should actually have quite a few spells to help keep her safe. Rapists don't like being turned into newts and then cooked up for dinner.
Whichever has the highest amount of loli pantsu
That'd probably be Totoro, then?
Narrative as in a load of bullshit some faggot likes to parrot.
>That bathing scene
A-B looped. Miyazaki is a dirty old man.
>Only Yesterday
Based and comfypilled.
>Rapists don't like being turned into newts and then cooked up for dinner.
You don't speak for us.
>did you notice how none of the other girls her age were focused on making their own way yet
That's 'cause all dem city folks are getting more and more fancier and stuff! Y'all remember that spoiled girl who diddn't want to self baked food.
why do you ask a legit question then proceed like it's rhetorical and why are you a dumbass?
prob castle in the sky. i like the mythical feeling of finding laputa. i also love the book gulliver's travels.
there are probably days where i might say nausicaa or whisper of the heart. i think it's cool af that several others are saying whisper of the heart. I did not expect that.
This
Cat returns and Walking castle are my favorites and the most rewatchable
Whisper of the Heart is definitely the best. However all of the popular ones are good movies.
I actually agree
all great movies: Kiki > Yesterday > Ponyo > Totoro > Kaguya > Wind > Yamadas > Porco > Whisper > Spirited > Mononoke > Nausicaa > Ocean > Laputa >
and the rest: Cat > Poppy > Arrietty > Howl > Fireflies > Earthsea > Pom > Marnie
It's actually Spirited Away though...
only yesterday is shit and fuck everyone who claims otherwise.
I wouldn't want anyone with such shit taste to fuck me, though
100% spot on
Is the moral of this film that its better to be a delirious schizophrenic than to be depressed?
The moral of this film is "MUH FAMILY BONDS"
It IS better to be a delirious schizophrenic than to be depressed, though.
I guess I would be happier having adventures with my imaginary loli grandma than living this bleak existence. Good movie though, for sure. I put it off for a long time and ended up enjoying it much, much more than I thought I would.
Huh, that's not too bad. Not quite how I'd do it, but aside from Kiki, Ponyo and Earthsea everything's within a tier of where it should be.
Kiki and Ponyo should both be up about 2~3 slots each, and Earthsea belongs in it's own category several dozen layers below the rest.
I liked the main character and found her very relatable, but the message didn't resonate with me at all and I found the second half and conclusion to be very unsatisfying. It was pretty clear what was going on, but then the conveniently placed old lady just exposition dumps everything at the end so the girl can finally figure shit out.
Not a bad movie, but I had the opposite reaction from yours.
I agree that it does crap at the end and it was all pretty predictable. To be fair, I liked it mostly for the animation, backgrounds and pure friendship between girls.
Those factors are all pretty strong in it, so more than fair enough.
More like kike delivery service amirite?
Howl is still pleb filtering, I see. It's easily top 5 Ghibli film.
Howl is a very good pleb filter indeed, but in the exact opposite direction you seem to think it is.
was your attention span not long enough to not browse Yea Forums during the film?
Local theater is doing its yearly ghibli event. Feels good man
Only yesterday sucked. Whole movie is some boring chick remenicing on her shitty childhood. I watch these movies to feel good
