Viz is a partner of Shueisha (and Shogakukan) directly, that's why they get away with ruining the English manga industry worldwide. In a just world, other English countries outside the US would just translate their own versions of manga and the scanlation industry wouldn't have to be the default for anyone who cares about quality.

The product itself is more important than translation quality, not that most people could give a shit anyway. They're the largest comics publisher in the US, bigger than DC or marvel

But not with Shueisha, which is the key. If it were up to fans, nobody would want Viz translating anything but they don't get a choice because Viz was co-founded by Shueisha back when Burgers couldn't handle manga and thus a terrible precedent was established. The only reason something like Yuna isn't done by Viz but by someone else (and therefore not on mangaplus) is because Viz is so puritanical (by Burger standards) they refuse to acknowledge it exists. I imagine that when Yuna is over and a new ecchi manga replaces it, it will be avoided by Viz but picked up on mangaplus just like Hinomaru, David and Japan are since mangaplus is directly a Shueisha service (and thus international, unlike Viz which is blocked in certain countries).

That's a bit different. Kodansha basically set up it's own US based subsidiary to cut out the middle man as much as possible. While Yen Press and Seven Seas mainly deal with stuff from other competitors of Shueisha and Shogakukan, or series from those two which Viz declines. They aren't actively taking series away from Viz.

In fairness to Viz's translators, they might be perfectly competent, but bound by corporate bureaucracy. If their editor tells them that the Japan side wants proper nouns translated a certain way, there's nothing the translator can do, and probably nothing the editor can do either. They can either go with something they might know is an asinine rendition of translation, or quit and never get translation work from Viz again. Similarly both mangaka and translator can be on twitter, and there can be some engrish that the translator could get authorization to fix if they just talked to the author for a minute, but the translator will be contractually bound from directly contacting the mangaka. They'll be stuck passing their requested fix up through Viz's bureaucracy then down through Shueisha's bureaucracy, all while hoping some editor or licensing liaison doesn't decide their request isn't worthy of the mangaka's time, and stop it from ever reaching the mangaka.

Dumb as it is, that's basically what happens. A lot of translators are essentially independent contractors, and the publishers don't want a bunch of contractors taking up a mangaka's time with what they think is small shit.

Why? Manga gets translated to tons of languages and English isn't even the most dedicated. It would set a terrible precedent if translators could bother the mangaka who are still actively creating the work and have more important things to worry about. Most flaws in translation seem to have very little to do with misunderstandings in what is being implied. The issue is rather how to get across what is being said to as many English speakers as possible. You'll see the issue in these threads if you pay attention to the translation process, there will be Japanese text that everyone can grasp but you have to find a way to say it in English that people with no interest in Japanese or with bad vocabulary can understand. If the translator just needs to know what is meant, they clearly aren't a good translator and any random Japanese person could help them. The One Piece translator doesn't need to know what the One Piece is to translate the series. Sure, it may mean some things aren't translated accurately in the end but people who care can learn Japanese.

It’s true. I’ve found the personal websites for a couple translators and at least two work from Japan and not the US as freelancers. One also does seminars for college students in Japan about becoming translators for manga publishers. Translation has shifted from being in the US to going back to Japan.

Edo and Sengoku refer to parts of history that had a bunch of changes in leadership so you need the distinction between "period" referring to the whole or "era" to refer to a specific time when someone was in power. That's not the case with and after Meiji though, so either is acceptable. I think "era" is generally used though.

I'm listening through it, and the specific thing he says regarding the line is　ぴんとある, which google at least offers up taut as a potential translation. It makes sense in the context of the thread he's talking about
