The game is actually pretty generous with free characters. Monthly events always give characters for exmaple and there are now "side-stories" which are old events available all the time, including some crossover ones like Tales of and Love live.
It's VERY grindy though since there's a very large level cap and it takes a while to get it, and then you also need to level up weapons and summons which is done through loot.
