Franxx deals with sexuality and interpersonal relationships in a meaningful way, the same as many of the anime classics of the 1990s and early 2000s.

Anime studios follow a long tradition of Japanese art and craftsmanship, where every work is created a style imitative of a previous work of art. Purely original content is frowned upon unless it's created for the foreign market. The imitative aspects of any series are meant to give it a foothold in the Japanese market while the more original or rebellious parts are meant for overseas consumers.

Depends on what exactly you wanted from the anime. The story is less than halfway done so it's too early to tell if it will fulfill all our expectations, but so far I think it has more potential than the anime. It's great seeing completely new scenes and developments with the characters
