前略
As a fun behind the scenes fact, I briefly worked for a museum with a large collection of glass, including many pieces from Murano. That wasn't my department, so I'm not an expert or anything, but it was pretty amazing to see. It's incredibly detailed work.

A lot of cute faces in this chapter.

I was expecting everyone to grab

Thanks for the dump. It's a cute and straightforward chapter, but at the same time I like how it touches on a topic that I think about. How different people view and think about the Neo Venezia and Venice in different ways - is it an imitation or a successor? Truth be told, I think the cynics from Manhome should get a grip. It's not like they just built the Las Vegas version of the city on Mars and called it a day. With so much salvaged from Venice, with the overall geography of the city matching the original's, it's much more robust than "The Venetian". At the same time, it's not like a theme park that shuts for the night - it's obvious that many people live, make a living, and have their families there. Perhaps that's an area where Neo Venezia trumps actual Venice today - with so many complaints about residential pricing plaguing the historic centre, it's nice to see that Neo Venezia seems to have so many people actually living in the city and not just commuting to it. Though hopefully they have enough things to amuse the youth crowd, otherwise that could leave the city with a rapidly ageing population.

Maybe I'm thinking too much here.

Props to Amano again for including accurate history of the original city. Though it should also be mentioned that the main reason that glassmakers were sent to Murano was so that if a fire broke out in one of the ateliers, it wouldn't cause any damage to Venice proper. Venice liked isolating important craftsmen it seems, as they pulled the same trick with the guys working in the Arsenale (but for different reasons). Murano's definitely well worth a visit, though a sad thing for me is that I don't know if there's a reliable way to know if any of the glass sold there is actually genuine Murano glass. Well, aside from having the item literally made in front of you. Maybe Akira-sama has found a reliable way in that far-flung future?

I think the other key point is that something being non original or non authentic doesn't make it bad. You've got to realize that they're different, but both can still be enjoyed in their own way.

the question here is, do you value historicity? if you can't tell the difference, and no one else can tell the difference, does it matter? for most people it does, because they are buying into the story behind it, not the actual thing. kind of similar to watching someone cook for you for hours vs just getting the exact same food delivered to you.

the man in the high castle (the book, i don't know about the show) discusses this topic in an interesting way, if anyone wants to read.

this was a dorkimus maximus chapter, thanks!

the glass manlet has no chance though, i feel sorry for him.

I guess everyone has their own answer to that question. For me, the loss of the historicity does mean a loss in value, but that can be offset by other factors.

For an example from my hometown, there was a historical building that burned down. Before the fire, you could go and see it from the outside, but it was in poor shape, so it was deemed unsafe to go in. After the fire, they built a replica that now allows you to tour the inside. That's the kind of case where I might argue the new one has more value.

In my case, I think Neo Venezia is kind of a special case. Take Caffè Florian in one of the previous chapters - it was taken out of Venice, stored and transported to be rebuilt in Neo Venezia. Even Akari notes that she's sitting in a cafe whose story started long before her birth, and will continue to go on. While I can't say that every building in the city got that stored-and-transported treatment, I'd wager the majority of the important historic sites did. So for those buildings, they have the benefit of looking like the 'originals', while having both their history with the new added chapters of "And then we got dismantled, stored, sent across the stars to our new home in a reproduction of our original city". Which is definitely a story in itself.

I suppose as well that in the ARIA universe if you're hankering for the original Venice... well, you don't really have much of a choice other than Neo Venezia. Whatever the circumstances, the original city sank/flooded (given how intensely monitored that possibility is in reality, I don't think it would've caught Manhomeians off guard - they must've known it was coming for a while!) NV has an indeterminate amount of original Venice 'material', in a place built and designed to be very close to the original... and it has the added bonus of most likely not suffering from the same problems as the Venice on Manhome. I'm definitely the kinda guy who sees NV as a 'next chapter' in the overall history of Venice. She's survived wars, foreign occupation, and most of her was uprooted and transported to a new planet to carry on her story.

Now I really want to know the timeline/circumstances around Venice's "last days" on Manhome. Was she stripped of the important artefacts and buildings and left to sink? Is there a near-entire Venice lurking silently in the lagoon waters, begging to be explored by divers/submersibles? It'd create some powerful images, for sure.

That's not an Akari face

There's got to be some specific event that caused them to decide it was time to evacuate. Since they say "flooded and sank" here, I maybe we can assume the floods came first. Rising sea levels?

There would be plenty of time for the deconstruction. Then the remaining buildings would just sit abandoned. By the last days, everyone was probably long gone.

Thanks as always.
That's also a cute face but I like better.

You know, this makes me think about why Neo Venezia was built. Deconstructing, transporting to Mars and rebuilding it's a really big project, that involves a lot of time and resources. Even if people wanted to save Venice, building Neo Venezia was probably not their first ideas.
Specially considering Manhome being a place full of conveniences, makes you wonder about the circumstances of the founding of Neo Venezia.

thanks op

Yokohama then Planetes and now this. What do you have against Earth OP?

Makes me wonder what's the next manga OP's planning to post.

they botched up the terraforming of Mars, there should be a chapter explaining how they fucked up and why there is water everywhere if I recall correctly. i guess they tried to make the best of it and recoup some of their losses by making a tourist destination.

I haven't thought about a next series, or tried to have some destroyed Earth theme. Apocalypses are just comfy.
