It wasn't now, but dropout dropped Kaguya pretty soon after Jaimini picked it up. Keep in mind, at the time Jaimini was releasing as a "different" group called FastScans, and rhino was moaning and bitching about it on Yea Forums despite being weeks behind because the group is really badly managed and can't ever stay on schedule. At first FastScans had shit TL but eventually the quality increased to a point that it was at least as good as dropout pretending to be Yea Forumsnonymous scans in part because dropout dropped the quality to release "faster" yet the niggers were still release a week or 2 late.

The funny thing is that people don't realize Jaimini uses the digital raws for their releases instead of getting early raws like they do for Shounen Jump, so those same retards complain about Kaguya taking forever when the raws literally don't come out until Wednesday US time zones while gook scans get their shit early and release on Mondays or Tuesdays. Getting Jaimini to keep up the pace by releasing JP->KR->EN scanlation is fine, they got complacent at one point and slowed down but bitching about it not being out on Thursdays when it has most of the time for the past few months without realizing when they get their raws is just moronic. Someone had asked in here earlier how does anyone organize their digital manga and what manga reader does anyone use. Well, when I download manga, I create a folder called Japanese Manga and then inside that folder, I create a folder for each manga series along with which manga volumes in that folder. For instance "Toppu GP (v01-04)" so I'm able to keep track which volumes are in which folder so I don't have to look in each folder. As for the manga reader, I have ComiCat which I use for my digital comics, but I also edited ComiCat for a second application install that contains only Japanese manga. In effect, I have two versions of ComiCat installed, one for comics and another for Japanese manga.

Well, here's what really happened. Monka scouted me to work on 5tobun since the team needed a new PR, and he liked my work on Witch Hat and Senryuu. I enjoy 5-tobun a lot, so I obliged. I tend to be aggressive in my editing, and my style tends to be very aggressive. I think very often, translations can be too literal - especially fan translations - and not get the actual emotional intent of the original across. So I made a lot of changes to the script, things I thought were appropriate, and that got me into conflict with the TL, who shares an exact opposite philosophy on translation, who thinks things should be as literal as possible.

Now, let me be frank. The TLs on the Yea Forumsnon team are some of the best I've ever worked with. They were meticulous, precise, and passionate. And their perspective on translation is perfectly valid, I think. I disagree, but the issue of formal vs functional translations is a constant topic in linguistics. Anyways, this lead to a big argument, which I thought was fairly civil but heated at times. Most notably the issue of Nino's big speech in 82 came up. He wanted it as close to the original Japanese as possible, I thought it should be reworded to sound more natural and impactful in English. One of the key lines was

I honestly do think that the TLs there were very talented, and as a new member I may have overstepped my bounds.

I don't blame the other members for removing us, if they think we can't help them express their goal for the series. But I think 82 was ultimately a pretty good product. 83, I don't think it is. We got too eager with a newly formed team, and were so hasty with translation that ultimately it ended in a worse chapter. Ego is a big part of it, there's always that competitive spirit when two groups are competing over a series, but if the end result is a worse translation, then I don't think it's worth it. We rushed the chapter out too fast, too imprecisely, and the backlash is expected, justified, and appropriate. I feel rather ashamed that we published a chapter with so many mistakes. I don't want that to be the quality of something I'm attached to.

So we've been working with additional TLs, as well as scouring the threads, to fix mistakes, and will probably release a v2 sometime later. As angry as some of these replies have been, I'm actually grateful, because I think this teaches me a lesson about never being this sloppy again. I think I've done good work, as have the translators and other people attached.

I don't blame them. I have nothing but respect for the Yea Forumsnons, and I think they do good work. If they feel we oppose their vision for the series, they're free to remove us. Personally, I think debate and conversation are good things when it comes to editing, but I get how it can slow down the progress or how they might want more control without so much arguing.

The team fragmented and we're all working under different names. I don't think you have to be subversive or insidious to compete. You don't have to be Ichika, you can be Nino.

I don't think it's a matter of telling them how to do things, but I think it's the role of an editor to, well, edit. Disagreement is fine, having different opinions can lead to a more polished translation. But if they have a specific vision in mind, I think that's fine too.

Long story short, the typesetter who is also the unofficial leader get tired because of sheer unprofessionalism and laziness and jumped ship to other group.

I've done work in a professional context too, and in my experience it's typically the opposite, staying with the literal tends to be worse for most audiences because the emotional nuance and voice is lost, and some terminology can be jarring. I mean, for the most part, that's what most professional translators I know say too. I worked on the Kaguya scans. The scans stopped because the raw provider stopped providing them, IIRC, and to be honest we lost motivation after a while once JB took over. They were always able to release faster due to early raws, and their TL quality caught up. I was a little annoyed at the time, but I think that ultimately they do a fine job. If they falter, maybe we'll pick it back up.

Yep. Went to some aggregate sites to check, they all either have the shitty TL for ch83 or their bots mistook that troll upload of the spoiler pics for ch83 and have those instead. They don't have either the updated dropout release or the Yea Forums release.
All of the dropout fuckups are going to stay out there forever because they couldn't bother to proofread.

If your goal is indeed to let people enjoy HIGH QUALITY 5toubun scanlations which we all know and love, you're doing it wrong in the first step:

I think that underestimates how much work is done in the editing process. In general, it's our job to help the TL articulate their speech or to help revise things to make it more readable and appropriate. I've done TL work before too, and I think that a good PR is invaluable.

That said, being critical first thing once entering a new group is likely a bad idea.

No, it doesn't. I did scanlations for close to a decade. You're supposed to clean up clear grammatical errors, not rewrite dialogue. Like I said, I agree with your proposed dialogue changes and think they're most natural. But you overstepped the bounds of your position. At the very least, you should have backed down when your proposed changes were rejected. If there isn't a clear hierarchy in the workload, then it all goes to shit.

I agree that everyone should be able to voice their opinions. But when it comes down to the dialogue, the translator has the final say. He should have voiced his opinion and then backed down when the translator said no. That said, the translator should've been able to be more civil about it and the typesetter should have just gone with the translator's decision. Basically, they're all idiots.

Translator = translates duh
Editor = typesets, cleans, redraws
Proofreader = fixes grammar, spelling, etc.
Sometimes "editor" is broken down into separate "typesetter", "cleaner" and "redrawer" positions if multiple people are handling specific parts
