I was happy with mpc-hc for a long time
and then i just moved to vlc and i've been tolerating occasional screen tearing and shit like that's ok for too long now
but i'm through.

It just pisses me off that there literally isn't a good media player with a gui, i like using a gui, if that makes me an idiot so be it, i tolerated omxplayer with no gui for ages on a raspberry pi and it's just honestly annoying having to do that.

MPV remains my favorite player right now, and while it's based around the command line it does have a GUI user. Are you sure whatever version you used or compiled it with had that selected? I thought pretty much everyone not using it as a component enable the on screen display for example, but since that is a configure option could be possible not to get it I guess.

The GUI doesn't handle all the preferences, but all controls, subtitles and so on seem to work fine even though I mostly just use the keyboard controls.

M&H is very inconsistent, it has some great episodes and characters and some terrible ones. It doesn't help that the beginning is the worst part of the series, so if you try it have some patience.

I only just heard about this show, and only just got mpv. yeah it has the controls onscreen and that's good enough.

but for example, changing audio sync or loading a different subtitle file, i don't think i can do that now so easily. It's annoying.

The art design in Carole and Tuesday fucking sucks. The worldbuilding is terrible. That fact that doesn't only add nothing, but actively detracts from the story because there's no thought put into it and its obvious. The music is garbage generic western pop that it would be genuinely hilarious if the world starts believing in "human music" because of it. Genuinely the worst soundtrack of any of his shows. The plot beats are all well tread shit you get in American TV movies, not even executed particularly well. It's the uglier Bones show this season in both art design and animation. There is literally nothing redeemable.

The art design is what really bothers me though because all of Watanabe's shows have been stylish until this shit came out.

I'm not going to say it's shit, because it's passable, but thats all it is. As someone whose loved Watanabes shows, this genuinely feels like the death of him as an auteur. Literally anyone could have made this show.

I like the character designs, the OP, and the fashion design. The animation is nice (though not in the top 3 of the season), I may be a little harsher on it because I expected more, but to see a creator you love fall into mediocrity sucks.

Any criticism regarding the writing falls flat since you're comparing C&T to an embarassing shitshow like ZnT. BSD is also the significantly less animated show, the first episode was almost entirely talking heads, shot in the most stale way possible by an Iga who is completely phoning it in at this point.

Their stupid videos with shitty riddles were already in episode one, as were their "terrorist attacks" that don't kill anyone. Thankfully I removed almost every memory of this garbage from my mind long ago, but the feeling of second hand embarassment I felt for Watanabe I can't forget.

Afaik he was kind of looking to make something popular again and I don't know if I can blame him for that. If he just kept making things that were mostly well-respected but had so-so financial returns, his directing days might've been numbered.

Personally I think it'll pick up as the story goes on (with music I actually like at some point), but then, the writing's been exactly what I'd expect so far, given the pacing and scope they're going for. The characters are kids and they more or less act their age, and contrivances will probably happen at least until they make the big time.
