That would be physically impossible. The king does not personally pass judgement on laws unless he wants to or the case specifically requires it, in the vast majority of cases the authority to pass judgement is delegated to various officials: magistrates, judges, courts, whoever.

Having the king personally settle this kind of dispute means it isn't really a merit based institution: it's the king's personal institution and his influence trumps the rules. If you know the king and have his ear, you have power over other students who don't have that same connection.

If it were actually based on laws the king would have delegated authority to settle disputes to the head of the school or some board / tribunal not associated with himself or any noble family.
