Ergo Proxy as a whole. Kara no Kyoukai for just the first ova.
Seriously you fuckers. ARE YOU READING ME YOU FUCKERS? GO WATCH THE FIRST KARA NO KYOUKAI OVA IF YOU HAVEN'T, fucking really it'll be a pretentious treat if you are a masochist. Every dialogue and shot is like Violet Evergarden on drugs trying to make the movie seem deep and full of plot but it's a very simple story in reality.
Define pretentious first.
I watched almost every anime out there, from complete trash to masterpieces 1000+ series, but i never got into this one(dropped it after 2-3ep), is it worth to watch or are the memes exaggerating its worth?
Eilfn lied
Hyouka
I don't see how NGE could fall under this label when the story is as elaborate and the characters as developed as they are in the show. Aside from the soundtrack and art direction both being impeccable.
People who are really stupid like to mock Evangelion because they can't even appreciate it.
wrong picture
If End of Evangelion doesn't blow you away, you're a tasteless pleb. The last twenty minutes are basically the best cinematic experience ever thought up.
>contrarians fag calling others newfag cause they don't agree with his opinion.
Yea Forums what happend to you ?
>Hur hur i'm so unique every one say those anime and manga are good but i say they are shit hur hur look at me i'm so different
>he has never seen Game of Thrones
everything by naoko yamada is pretentious. but that's okay because visuals and sound design are most important in anime, and naoya has that on lock
LOL the acting in that show is so bad, and the writing has gone downhill since season 4 when the books and show went separate directions. Besides, that's just rich jewish kids playing pretend on elaborate sets. EoE is hand drawn sequential art set to an incredible story with beautiful music behind it. It's pretty much a miracle it was made if you ask me.
evangelion is far from perfect but it's not pretentious, it try clumsily sometime to tell something with symbole and shit but it's never hard to get the meaning of a scene and the message itself is quit simple, it's not referencing 20 obscure artiste or writer from the 20th century and the creator itself never said he was making a deep masterpiece
Easy
Kara no Kyoukai
wow this is some heavy retardness
Anno still ended up making nirvana in the human instrumentality project, and having Shinji reject it, so the whole plot ends up being a buddhist and eastern story told with jewish and christian mythology on top because it is fiction... but it does live up to its name by the end, it's just not the religious story it is visually presented as.
He said himself he choose this mytho cause it looked cool
you're allowed to do that, but when it comes to the plot, he basically did end up with a religious story, just not a western one
>thinking anything live action can compete with 2d visuals at their best
YOURE A LITTLE FINGER
Instrumentality isn't nirvana, brainlet. Instrumentality is combining humanity into one, not nothingness. It's return to the womb, the ultimate worldly desire, not the rejection of desire. It's anti-nirvana.
Fucking hell, why can't anyone produce something even half as good? How can it be so alone?
there's plenty of other anime that reach its level, albeit in different areas. you're right that there's nothing quite like it though.
it is nothingness, and the whole instrumentality project sees everyone being turned into lcl and their at fields disappearing... in buddhsim, the ego is an illusion and without it, you achieve freedom from the cycle of rebirth. that basically is how the at field functions in the show, and forcing all mankind into nirvana by freeing them from it is the entire final plot of nge.
you could disagree but I'm not the first one to think it this way...
HunterXHunter
It's not pretentious, it's just fucking depressing. It's certainly a work of art, but that doesn't mean that it's enjoyable. And yeah, that's the fucking POINT, it's partially to shit on the concept of escapism, but that doesn't make me like it more, especially given that I'm not the target of this message.
I found Legend of Galactic Hero's to be Star Trek tier pseudo-intellectual.
>liking anime makes you a contrarian
>It's not pretentious, it's just fucking depressing.
I never got why people say EoE is depressing. Every time I've seen that movie, it made me happy.
God you'r retared not liking anime everybody acclaime like akira or paprika make you a contrarian

already lost the argument
I’ve watched/read zero (0) of these except for 1 episode of Eva.
Lemme guess: you're the same poster spamming the Lain, Ergo Proxy, Monster and every other classic is overrated meme.
You know, hating on things that make you think beyond "muh dick" only reveals how much of a brain let you are.
at least six of those are really good...
Nothing good happens in the entire film. Every triumph is undermined by some failure, multiple main characters suffer horribly violent deaths, then everyone else dies and the world ends. The movie ends with the only two survivors hating eachother and hopelessly seething among the ruins of their complete and utter failure, for which they have no one to blame but themselves.

agree it was a little pretentious but still fucking fantastic. Backstory was kind of lame but was overshadowed by just about everything else being great. Episode 25 and 26 were shit and people who defend them are deluded

Your favourite
this unironically, except eva actually is deep
moe isn't pretentious. moe is at least honest and upfront aobut what it is. eva lies to the audience and pretends to be something that it's not.
How does Eva lie and what does it pretend to be?
Normalfag detected
nothing will ever top angels egg.
It pretends to be this deep and profound thing when what it's really built on is just doing the opposite of cliches. The main characters' problems are all petty and juvenile (with one exception) and can be easily solved with the smallest amounts of maturity. The use of surrealism is WEAK at best and fails to disguise how paper thin the show's underlying concepts really are.
There's a huge degree of dishonesty to this show that really rubs me the wrong way. It's pretending to be something it's not is just a reflection of the writter's hyper-inflated ego. Pretending to be something it's not is the definition of pretentiousness, that's why that word gets thrown around so much when talking about Ergo Proxy.
>It pretends to be this deep and profound thing when what
How does it pretend to be deep and profund?
>it's really built on is just doing the opposite of cliches
This is a bit weird view of Eva. Rarely does Eva actually subvert any cliches. I can only really think of a few during the entire series.
>The main characters' problems are all petty and juvenile
Almost all of them have one, or both, of their parents abandoning or dying on them at a young age. That's hardly petty.
>The use of surrealism is WEAK at best
I definitely wouldn't call any part of Eva surrealist.
>It pretends to be this deep and profound thing when what it's really built on is just doing the opposite of cliches
That's just your retarded understanding. It uses a ton of cliches and you would know that if you actually watched it. It's also really not trying to pretend to be profound, it's just the director spilling his heart out basically.
>The main characters' problems are all petty and juvenile (with one exception) and can be easily solved with the smallest amounts of maturity
I think that a lot of things could be fixed with some real dialogue between the characters, but as a whole the characters' issues are too deep to be fully healed maybe ever. Shinji's mom died in front of him and his Dad abandoned him. He didn't have any friends for 14 years living with his teacher doing nothing. Asuka's mother killed herself in front of Asuka and killed the doll that represented her too. Rei doesn't know why the fuck she exists. Misato hated her Dad but was also saved by her Dad, who died doing so, leaving her alone and confused. She also feels a large amount of guilt for her sluttiness. Ritsuko is mostly just an evil bitch but her mother was an evil bitch too.
None of those problems are petty or easily solvable
>The use of surrealism is WEAK at best and fails to disguise how paper thin the show's underlying concepts really are.
Eva isn't surrealist and you don't know what surrealism is
However I think that the aesthetics of the show are great and perhaps amplify the greatness of the entire thing. I do think that Eva couldn't survive with its story alone. It is a master-craft in aesthetics. Even if the Christian symbolism wasn't supposed to mean anything, with an American audience especially I think it affects something deep inside us.
how did you enjoy that garbage. The riot scene was the only good one and it hardly even lasted. Could have been so much more violence with power armor niggas killing rioters and criminals. But they had to do a shit love story that wasn't compelling or interesting with a cucked main character who can't shoot a terrorist.
>Tokyo godfathers
>Legend of the galactic heroes
>Lupin
>Mushishi
do you know what pretentious means?
Elfen Lied.
The opening alone is more pretentious than anything I've ever seen.
>Violet Evergarden
>pretentious
It literally just exposition...how the fuck is telling you everything, it doesn't even have a fucking deeper meaning or anything.
Ergo Proxy
The anime isn't pretentious, the fans are. Know the difference it could save your life.
Hahahahahahaha... NO!!!
Boogiepop
>Episode 25 and 26 were shit and people who defend them are deluded
I unironically think they're great on their own, but I'd be lying if I didn't admit I would leave the series with a much different opinion if there wasn't for EoE
>he hasn't seen STAR WARS
Lain
true
I think your right. I enjoy Eva a lot more when I'm depressed. Its kinda cathartic. It can be nice to watch uplifting stuff when your down but sometimes its nice to empathise with someones misery.
By this metric nothing is "deep". You don't have to be profoundly emotionally affected by everything you watch, but at least give good writing it's due
I think you're confusing Angel's Egg with Angel Cop.
I'm a fucking idiot, I meant to be replying too my post probably makes sense now.
One thing's pretentiousness is a reflection of the other's.
>me high iq
Pottery
>more than 50iq
>high
Maybe he was right after all.
>Episode 25 and 26 were shit and people who defend them are deluded
Truth
25&26 were necessary
They were a Buddhist ending while EoE was a rejection of Buddhism
The execution and narrative make it pretentious.
Serial Experiments Lain
