Weeeeell... Part of the reason the older stuff looks darker is that is just how it transitioned to film format. It probably had a slightly brighter color palette before it was put to celluloid.

No, it was just darker in the 80's because the sun was further away.

It's not just nostalgia goggles or some kind of affection for an 80's aesthetic that makes anime visuals during this time so great. Japanese animation was literally at its peak in the late 80's. They had finally cracked how to do hand-drawn animation REALLY WELL after over two decades and they had major budget to spare because the Japanese economy was booming. City Hunter, Touch, Dragonball, and Macross still look fucking fantastic. Even shitty low budget shows had great, fully animated openings and the shows themselves still managed to have good, well-drawn and fluid movement.

And then when you get to animated motion pictures there's just no comparison. Dirty Pair Project EDEN's opening is BEAUTIFUL. The art direction, fluid movement, dynamic lighting, and the synchronicity is all there. Not to mention the amazing OST. This is Japan before the Lost Decade.

As somebody who owns cells from various '80s and '90s anime, this isn't the case. If anything some of them are a tiny bit darker than they appear on screen. It depends a lot more on machine settings (broadcast/taping/remastering/etc.) than the film used to photograph the cells.

I hate it when I'm wrong. I have heard shit like that for years, though, that some shit happens in the process that makes it darker. Now I look like an ass.

You can always recode the OGM to an mkv, they're pretty much the same type of file though.
