I feel like he does a lot of stuff that would be awful in any other context but he somehow makes it work by turning it up to 11 and embracing its ridiculousness

Toriyama doesn't write super's manga, he just gives plotpoint and designs like in GT. He has a successor, that was probably your guy who did it.

As for your question. Not gonna lie, he had a lot of luck, but the guy is pretty damn talented, especially for the time, and did some great things.

That's a possible theory, but he never got amnesia besides the original injury. the only thing it did was turn him good.

He isn't as bad a writer as most people say. the biggest sin you could say for him was listening to the crowd too much.

DB was definitely genius, no doubt, but it got hackish as the series extended too much.

This. I really wish he stuck with his guns and kept Gohan/Trunks and Goten as the protagonists. I mean Gohan isn't that great compared to the others as a protagonist (save Great Saiyaman that's the best part), but at least Boo would feel like his arc.
