He was never really in any position of getting axed, it started as a one shot, got serialized, ended properly, the volume sold great, so the writer made more with new couples, the volumes continue to sell great, so he continues to make more.

I'd argue the 4th couple had an ending too, it's only 2&3 who are still kind of up in the air
