Every interesting hobby in anime is expensive or has a high learning curve before it starts to be fun or requires friends.
Pretty much all reasons why anime is my main hobby in the first place.

>Has anime ever gotten you to try out a new hobby?
Hell yes but I have to say I liked that kind of things before, the anime just give me the excuse.

>Did you like it?
Now i can't live without it

Pic related got me and a bunch of friends to try out tennis. It was pretty fun, but mostly because my friends sucked and I would usually win.

of course

my hobby IS anime

Watching BECK made me get back into guitar in a big way. I didn't start a band or anything but I'd have regular jam sessions with some friends

really wanted to try boxing because of ippo but never gotten around to it.

After watching a literal commercial turned anime for plastic toys, i got into building+painting model kits, i like it but i am disappointed that in reality not a single person looks positively upon such a hobby and there is virtually no community for it in my country.

Yea, Sakamichi no Apollon gave me a love for jazz I'd never had before. Everytime I hear Someday My Prince Will Come or My Favourite Things, my heart comes to ache a bit. Picked up jazz on guitar and improved my fingerpicking skills. Jazz is fun genre for me because of the improvisation, whether melancholic or upbeat. (Most japanese OP music also like using chord progression typically used in jazz)

Attached: 42.jpg (298x169, 10K)

what genre you chaps tend to play?

I got into archery because of GARcher from Fate. Only shoot compounds though since I found it more enjoyable than recurves, love the hobby a lot.

Baseball

only bakas ride bikes

Drawing so I can draw my own anime boobs.

We'd play jazz mostly leaning towards bossa nova although we weren't very good. I was learning some music theory with one of my friends so the jam sessions were at least productive. Also forgot to mention that Kids on the Slope got me into jazz guitar like this user

What are your favourite jazz musicians?

>watch shokugeki
>looks fun
>start watching lots of Gordon Ramsay and binging with babish on YouTube
>cook a lot
>get semi decent
>make a lot of pizza/Italian dishes bc I love those
>make lots of Mexican food too

Bill Evans, Chet Baker, Miles Davis, Ryo Fukui, Kenny Burell

I wanted to get into art and animation because of anime and I enjoyed it but gave up because I realized I'd never be good at it.

Mountain lolis got me back into mountain climbing, trekking and camping after not doing it for 5 years. Haven't gone a year without doing it since.

Great taste. Haven't really gotten into Bill Evans though. What's a good starting point with him?

Does being a semi nEEt count?

anime made me pick up the violin because I wanted to be able to play anime openings on it. So yes.
Also, drawing doujins I guess.

Initial D got me into caring about my car and the /o/ board in general

If you have more hobbies than watching Japanese masterpieces you're nothing but a failed normalfag.

acca 13 made me want to become a corruption auditor of sorts.
Not even sure that's a real thing

Attached: ACCA 13-ku Kansatsu-ka - 05 - Large 06.jpg (1280x720, 108K)

So you want to be an auditor?

Can't even imagine what the fuck they could possibly talk about anymore.

Learning Japanese, drawing, how to talk to people and have a fun conversation. I wish I could actually commit to any of these though

hikaru no go gave me an interest in go. then i found out my cousin is a pro level player so i learned with him for a little while.

Attached: 1538816846868.png (646x726, 523K)

Every few years when I rewatch Keion I take my bass out of storage, clean off the dust and buy new strings but I never play it for more than a couple of days.

Ah yeah I guess. I'll stay a neet though. Real life probably isn't as dramatic as anime

My Hero Academia episode 3 got me inspired to start working out. Now it's a year and a half later and I'm happy with my body and can lift over twice what I could at the start.

Koufuku Graffiti and SnS got me into cooking.

Attached: BB744BC7-C652-4FE7-8105-59562693CA71.jpg (457x671, 52K)

yep, Yowamushi pedal got me to biking.

rather than doing that, go find some backing tracks to play on, jam with some mates or try producing songs with other collaborators

Shokugeki no soma, cooking.
I always liked cooking, but I'm lazy, so I just cooked the same dozen of recepies I knew.
It got me into the therory of cooking, as well as the technical aspects of making good food.

Sora Yori made me more interested in seeing the world before I die. Now I work on an international cruise ship, sailing from one country to the other.

Really fucking hate having to deal with Chinese though, which we could just throw them overboard but there's a rule against dumping trash into the sea.

Took a pet dog thanks to full metal alchemist.

What do the Chinese passengers do?

Other than having zero respect for public property, always trying to get into places where they didn't pay for or aren't allowed, stealing ship items, and constantly being late for boarding time as we're leaving port and then act pissy about it when we didn't wait for them - they cause so much fucking drama with other passengers.

Consuming media isn't a hobby.
Analysing and critiquing it might be, but if there's no active physical or mental component to an activity it can hardly be called a hobby.

No

It got me into scanlating for fun, does that count? And a bit of drawing, but it's frustrating how hard it is to get good.

Damn. But that's mainland Chinese people for you

my nigger

Too bad no matter how much you try, you can't will the defintion of hobby changing into something as stupid and asanine as that bullshit.

Long Riders got me interested in cycling
but I didn't have the motivation to start until my dad passed away earlier this year and I decided I need to live healthier and get out more

I wanted to play Ping Pong after watching the anime, but I have no friends and there aren't any clubs nearby.

Frame Arms Girls got me into building model kits, it's fun but expensive

agreed, the only thing left is to find a solid table

I went camping this one time because of Yuru Camp but I messed up the fire. Never camping again.

only I ride idiots

>tfw no mountain cycling anime
Long Riders and that other one came so close to my hobby but not close enough.

The last time this happened you guys got user to go camping and the forest was burnt down.

Attached: 1538913896509.png (646x618, 430K)

I started drawing because of Lucky Star, seeing Tamura-chan so into it was cool

A certain anime with puppets got me interested into sewing.

I'm not nearly patient enough to just chill out and do models like that but I'm very impressed by the attention to detail some guys put into it and I have a lot of respect for it I'm general.

He was Mexican though, so it was inevitable that something would go wrong.

Ryuuou no Oshigoto and Asian board games, mainly shogi though.

At the moment it's a war between BMW owners calling everyone else poor and everyone else calling BMW owners Turkish. /o/ also has the absolute worst namefags that I have ever seen and nearly every thread devolves into the same two or three phrases being spammed back and forth. It's a fucking shithole man

One of the worst boards. I barely go there anymore. Endlessly shitting on tripfags that totaled their car while being retarded is fun, though.

fuck yeah

Watching Dragonball on cartoon network as a seven year old made me pick up martial arts. I've been doing it ever since.

Sadly, I still can't fly. Even though it looked so easy on the show.

YGO got me into card games.

>Can't afford it

Anime made me try watching anime

Kendo is dumb anyway. Learn an actual useful martial art instead.

Drawing.
>Did you like it?
Yes even though I wish I could progress faster, seeing how little I'm able to do is discouraging sometimes because I'm exposed to the work of so many great artists online and can't help but compare it with my own.
I should lurk more in the drawthreads, it's fun to do stuff there more often than not.

Attached: 41348216974.jpg (1270x724, 558K)

Scanlation is a fucking service and you should be proud

I went camping thanks to this shit. Not being able to take a shower was horrible but the rest was fun. Maybe if i go somewhere with a river or something it is better

mahjong
yeah, it's pure fun

Attached: 1511325851752.jpg (1280x720, 489K)

Where do I start to git gud at drawing. I can free hand trace pretty well, but anything original I draw looks like shit. Feels bad because I see all these artists on twitter and it just makes me want to be able to express myself like that

tried diving after grand blue on nearby beach, liked it so much, nowadays, is almost mandatory for me in all vacations in which I have a chance to go to the beach, to rent equipment and dive with some m8s

I installed an app of reversi because an anime girl was playing it. It was ok but nothing special, as anyone would expect since it's just reversi. That's it.

Vilppu drawing manual

Anything that's not the price of the video game console?

I never tried new things when I make breakfast but watching cooking animes made me try new seasonings or techs which has improved my health and appetite.

Personally I didn't start improving until I went through the book "Design and Invention" by Hampton (it's in the /ic/ artbook thread, all the books you'll need are there, including Vilppu's that is pretty much the same thing stylized differently) and through some of the lessons on the Hitokaku website, all free
Take this with a grain of salt because I'm not too good myself yet but I think these two could be great starting points to teach you about the basics of construction and anatomy.
After that there's also this sikrit chink channel that gives solid advice youtube.com/watch?v=ko3Zaw8zffk&list=PLd9YlgrhwWqCSiGwPwA_N_nqKfTLY1Kn8 .

Yeah anime got me into manga. It's pretty good.

jojo got me into being /fit/

Busy learning how to play mahjong and making hands is confusing as fuck. How do you know when a hand is good

Fuck, you just reminded me that I haven't touched my tablet for more than half a year. My muscle memory has probably totally rotten off by now.

Attached: 1554208135199.jpg (584x575, 50K)

if it's worth a mangan or more it's a good hand

It's not a hobby anymore, move on

GET BACK TO IT DUMB NGMI
I get you there was a period during which I stopped drawing for months and it felt like shit. Hope you get to enjoy it if you manage to get back into it user.

Attached: 1518195747945.jpg (640x396, 60K)

True, but this might be a chance to get on it again. Last time I got stuck and I couldn't help but think that all I could draw was shit. Starting off from zero again might just be what I need.

Attached: 1549946486568.png (768x688, 244K)

I'll try to shoot for those hands thanks

I believe speed is more important.
If you want to aim for a good hand then aim for a riichi+tsumo+tanyao+pinfu+dora if you really want a mangan or more. Playing around pinfu and tanyao sure is the easiest way to win hands but as always, it's a case by case thingy. Not like my opinion matters anyway I'm a dirty 2-3 dan, you should ask for advice on /jp/

Attached: 1551702793181.jpg (611x659, 61K)

HnK turned me into a rock autist, now all my friends think I'm weird.

I'll check out /jp/ for advice, thanks. I've just been aiming for riichi and that's made me lose a lot.

I'm from St.Petersburg and damn, looks like dealing with Chinese is the same everywhere. But I bet our Russian tourists are tough to deal with too though.

Taiwanese / Singaporean / Hong Konganese are worse.

I know a nurse in Seoul and she told me that Russians are such an issue that being able to speak their language is a big career booster for medical staff.
So yeah, take it as you will

post rocks user

They're exactly the same, except they think they're better.
It's like African Americans compared to Africans, at least Africans know they're 3rd world trash.

Bakuman convinced me to start writing, which I still don't do enough of.
Mob Psycho 100 along with other typical shonen like Dragon Ball convinced me to start working out

Yama no susme got me into hiking. Next week, i'm going 2200m

Steins;Gate first introduced me to the wonders of the Nixie tube. Now I'm studying electric engineering and have a small collection of vacuum and gas tubes.

You're going to the corner shop and back?

That's it? Are you just walking to the store?

Team Medical Dragon made me want to become a surgeon. Currently in medical school now.

Out of curiosity, did you spend some time browsing gore beforehand to see if you were squeamish?
I've heard hilarious stories of surgeons who later realize cutting people up freaks them out

I weigh 428 pounds, so that's a lot for me.

No. Hiking to the top of a 2200m mountain

Attached: strong bocchi.png (497x370, 225K)

At that weight consider just dieting instead dude.
You'll destroy your knees.
500 kcal deficit, maybe a year and you can do it without hurting yourself

You can do it user! I'm rooting for you!

What mountain? Some of them are easy as fuck to hike

Attached: 1555334102645.jpg (1280x720, 315K)

It's still uphill 2km, you stupid mahou.

So, like, to the corner store up a hill and back?

yeah anime got me into cross dressing

Vertical 2km, nerd. Of course, he didn't mention how high above sea-level the start is.

That's nothing

So, like, to the corner store up a ladder and back?

I did but gore videos still bother me. It's weird though because watching videos of surgery and cadavers in person don't bother me one bit.

I'm sure climbing 2km is just what you do before breakfast, user.

Gore is raw. Surgery gives you the time and environment to disassociate, or whatever the phrase is.

I've got a staircase in my house
That must be at least 20m
So I'm walking up and down that 20x per day
That's 2000m, right?
Don't even think about it

I kind of understand what you're trying to say but first you're fabricating that definition and second there's always a mental component in watching anything (unless you watch it braindead and forget about it 5 seconds later)

I rather doubt it's 20m vertical. And 20 x 20 is 400, not 2000, user. Do you have brain problems?

Attached: 1478659659489.jpg (656x730, 118K)

Difference between a hobby and a pastime, user.

Israel here, russian tourists, while being loaded and very polite, are hard to deal with solely because they can't speak any language other than Russian 99% of the time, so like the other guy said, having Russian on your resume is a big boost.

basically this, I also wanted to try ping pong but nobody I know wanted to try it out and I'm too much of a pussy to do it alone

Tried to make bread because of Yakitate!! Japan some 10-odd years ago, but the show never mentions how much time bread needs to rise before baking, so I gave it 5 minutes then put it into the oven.
Needless to say, it was a while before I tried again.

Cooking from watching soma.
Also not directly, but I started learning an instrument because I want to be able to better relate to your lie in April.

cooking is a pretty fullfilling hobby.

Anime made me take up fansubbing. It's fun, but also I hate it. I've tried a bunch of other things, but I never really got into any of them because they're expensive, I have no friends, and I'd have to leave the house to do them.

20*20 is 400
going by the math, you're probably american and the floor to floor height there is about 3 meters, if you do go up and down 20 times a day, that's 60
also being american, i doubt you ever walked for longer than 60 meters anywhere, let alone climb 2000 vertically

"hey let me make dinner tonight"
how hard can it be you fucking aspie

I learned the wonders of riichi mahjong, definitely a vast improvement from the chinese base game.

You've never cooked for old people

alternatively "yeah im making my own dinner tonight you can sort yourselves out"

>Wasting food
They're old people. There's only 3 of us but they make food for 6 people. Every weekday. If I cook for myself, which I have, they end up throwing out even more food then they usually do.

>kendo is dumb
swordlet detected. it's not the best entry point for weapon based martial arts, but it is really good for you in general since it teaches you discipline, posture and even a little bit of japanese in general, that you can use outside the practice. It's also surprisingly not hard to transition from Kendo to Fencing. Although the first thing you'll need to learn is better self preservation during sparring.
Also fuck shoshinshas that aim for the gaps in your Do

>Fencing
The art of poking each other with flimsy bits of wire at high speed

Some, or at least encouraged me to try things I was already interested in.

Some cooking anime got me into cooking Asian food in general, cooking was always a hobby of mine but it was nice to expand horizons.

I can't remember what, but something got me into hiking, which has become a sort of supplementary activity for me.

Yowamushi pedal got me into cycling, which was good for a while although I stopped as it's far too dangerous to cycle in the countryside in the UK.

That Gainax anime about airsoft got me into airsoft and paintballing, which I still do.

I can't remember what, but something got me into Skydiving too (with the added help of Point Break).

And, in general, edgy anime of the late '90s and early '00s got me into being a manipulative and spiteful person to see if it would work, it did work, and it's a hard habbit to kick.

Yeah, if you go for olympic Epée fencing. Saber fencing is much more about hitting the shit out of each other while focusing on footwork. It'

I just wanted to add that it's also one hell of a workout and you can easily use it for any substitute that you can wield in one hand, be it a stick, a machete or even a knife.

>as it's far too dangerous to cycle in the countryside in the UK.
elaborate?

Yowamushi Pedal got me into road cycling. I ended up doing several centuries and overall enjoyed it

>Cycling
Are you over 50 per chance?
The only people I've ever met who ride bicycle as a hobby are literally babyboomers
Nothing like an overweight 60 something year old man in skin tight shorts

Attached: vegans-and-cyclists-comic.png (1000x1000, 106K)

Mixture of poor road quality and visibility, and drivers that simply aren't used to cyclists, especially not cyclists that want to cycle at speed. Narrow roads too.

It's just as bad in cities (and as a driver cyclists are a pain in the ass), we do not have many cycle lanes, and roads are mostly narrow with parked cars, plus it's illegal to cycle on the sidewalk so you have to be on the main road.

The whole popular cycling thing, and cycling as a means for transportation, has happened in the last 10 years in the UK. It's not at all like Europe where people know how to drive around cyclists and treat them as part of traffic. And it's a two way thing, most cyclists don't know how to be a part of traffic and not behave like utter idiots.

it's really fucking boring, all you do is count paperwork at the client's location for 60 hours a week and your boss tells you anything under 1 million is below materiality so you are actually guaranteed to never actually find anyone doing anything, it's just so they can fulfil SEC filing requirements

No way in shit could I ever actually do ballet.

It was partly my love of samurai manga and jidaigeki that got me into kendo. I love practicing more than anything. It's more of a budo-infused combat sport now than a real martial art in the sense that it would be used in any type of fighting, but the sense of practicing so many of the same skills that people practiced for life and death sword fights over so much time is real great. Also if I ever do have to get in a sword or stick fight, I'll be at an advantage.

I just wanted sweaty muscled tomboys doing some tumbling. I didn't need this void in my life.

It just means they (or the assistant) was at best drawing from reference and more than likely tracing and putting a filter on it in a poor attempt to disguise it. Usually happens with vehicles I've noticed.

I literally don't think I've ever heard a single good thing about Chinese tourists. The experience seems pretty universal no matter where you actually are.

Not really a hobby but I got a fart fetish after finishing Ojamajo Doremi

Well, then I don't know what to tell you, user. Maybe I'm just not affected by it because of theater, but I'd love to do HEMA in a park, public or not.

I just wish I could do HEMA but no such thing exists in my country ;-;

The pay off when you're finally able to read interesting stuff is great.

He should still seriously consider losing weight if he doesn't want to have serious chronic knee pain later in life. I am all for spreading the love of the outdoors to other anons, but at 428lbs you need some serious lifestyle changes if you want to not needlessly destroy your body any further.

Chinese exchange students are also universally agreed to be awful. They stink of cigarettes at all times and they all seem to wear knock off designer clothing.

The local technial college has a bunch of them but thankfully I'm never around them. A place I was working at about 10 years ago had a girl who worked there as a cashier.

She was actually the sweetest damn person I've ever met. Also tall and t h i c c. We got along really well but I was too much of a pussy to do anything except talk to her.

Yeah, kind of. Got into drawing recently. I suck and getting good at it requires a fuckton of work and time, but I enjoy it.

>Kendo is expensive
Where do you even live? You literally get to borrow all the equipment and train for free until you've decided you like it and after that you get to borrow the bogu until you want to become serious. All the trainers are typically volunteers so training fees are cheap as fuck, compared to BJJ for example. The equipment also lasts forever, I had my first hakama+gi set for 10 years before I bought new ones and I still use my first bogu.

Kendo is extremely affordable compared to almost any other sport in the long term, and the entry costs are practically zero. I just can't see how price is an issue, for a beginner at least.

>And it can fuck up your spine too
How? Legitimately curious. I've had other issues but never heard about spine problems.

I don't notice that until now, god dammit.

Now that is not true. We all know that Yea Forums pro-star trek board.

>You literally get to borrow all the equipment and train for free until you've decided you like it
Yeah, which after that you'll want your own equipment, which you'd have to buy.
>The equipment also lasts forever
I envy you. I broke around 3 shinais, although 2 were pretty cheap shitty ones that I could afford, and the third one was when I traded with a senpai and it bent the steel rod inside. On Hakama and Kimono I just outgrew them, so they don't fit me anymore. That should last you forever, but they're not cheap and you better take up sewing.
>Kendo is extremely affordable compared to almost any other sport in the long term
Provided we're talking exclusively about martial arts... I have no clue where you're getting that from. BJJ itself you need to buy nothing but gloves. Perhaps it comes down to where you live, but even fencing was much cheaper for me in the short and long run.
>How? Legitimately curious
I used to practice it when I was around 14, and the repeated impact gave me back pains for a few months but it fucked my right knee forever. Not too bad, I can run and shit just fine, but it is always the first to hurt and I can't put too much weight on it for too long. Maybe just bad genetics, idk

Attached: r9.png (836x1200, 552K)

The kendo club I attend is really cheap as well. Most of the beginners who end up quitting are weebs who want to play samurai and then get discouraged to find that it's actually really rigorous training and requires a large amount of front loaded time and practice getting your footwork and posture and basic cuts and etiquette down before you can really get into the meat and potatoes of it.

Sounds like you're hitting too hard with improper tenouchi. Also carbon fiber shinai are no good man, especially for a bueginner, they hurt like a bastard when you get hit off target, and as a beginner you'll probably be landing off target hits all over the place. Stick to bamboo shinai and learn to use your fast-twitch muscles to strike. Stay relaxed and don't muscle it. Sounds like too much power in the right hand.

Also, all hobbies cost money for the most part. Kendo is really no more expensive than anything else, the costs just come in bg chunks when you want to buy your own bogu. Get a damn job user.

I live in SoCal. I can barely afford to live let alone kendo fees

>Sounds like you're hitting too hard with improper tenouchi.
Very likely the case. I was just a dumb teenager when doing it.
>carbon fiber shinai
they weren't, though. it was bamboo shinai with what I assume was a steel rod inside.
Sure, but it sure as fuck ain't the least expensive of the bunch. Also I'm not the user who couldn't afford it, btw.

>BJJ itself you need to buy nothing but gloves
The equipment is a lot cheaper, yes. But it's (more often than Kendo at least) run for profit, so actual training costs tends to be higher. But yeah, compared to Karate or Judo, Kendo is definitely more expensive. I was thinking more sports in general, tennis/football/hockey would all be equally, or more, expensive than kendo where I live.

>but it fucked my right knee forever
I actually had the same issue (but I couldn't run/walk either) until recently. Turned out to be a muscular imbalance in my calves/shins due to pushing off of the left leg and stomping with the right. Try some one-legged calf-raises and toe-lifts if you haven't already, might be the same thing.

>broke around 3 shinais
Well, I should have specified that everything except the shinai last forever, I go through about four a year.

>and the repeated impact gave me back pains
Repeated impacts from hits to the head or fumikomi? Never heard anything like it, so super I'm curious.

It's not free for sure, what I reacted to was the claim that the original user was to poor to even try it.

That's true about it not being the least expensive thing, it costs a little dough if you stick with it.

No metal inside a regular shinai, it's just bamboo, rawhide, and string my dude.

The only place that teaches it in my area is really far away and costs 90 dollars a month. I literally can’t afford that. The only other option is the university club but I’m still in junior college

Not funny

yes it was

This seems like an auditor of a different area than mine.

IT auditors make sure the company/client has filled all holes of potential risks of several kinds and that all corporate rules are being followed. They suggest actions to locate and reduce the risks the company has in their infrastructure, as well as reduce or eliminate possible holes that allow information irregularities and information technology misuse. Huh. Might just try that, we'll see.
>Repeated impacts from hits to the head or fumikomi?
I have no fucking clue, my dude. Been like a decade since, but could be both and bad posture on top of it. Could've also been undeveloped back muscle that was finally being worked to fatigue. But I always thought it was due to the hits to my men. Fuck man, I remember having to dual pad that shit, the senpais were fucking beasts
Perhaps you should look into getting some income first then, user.
>No metal inside a regular shinai, it's just bamboo, rawhide, and string my dude.
Holy shit, okay, now you got me thinking that I am fucking crazy. I just checked my remaining Shinai and, indeed, there is no steel rod inside it. I know that my first 2 didn't have anything inside them, but were also cheap as shit and didn't last. The 3rd one, that bent, was also the heavier of the 4, but I know it had a thin metal rod inside it because that shit got bent in half close to the hilt.
