Because Ikki's arc would work really well if he was a girl. Ikki refusing to wear a mask for example is pretty in-line with his character compared to Shun and would have been a good story beat for the character. Saga and Kanon are unironically the best antagonists in the best arcs of the original series. Fun fact, Saga WAS possessed by a deity, likely Ares since he was larping as Ares the God of War in the Sanctuary Saga, we even see a spirit leave his body after he commit suicide at the end of the story arc coupled with the same changes that Shun has when he's possessed by Hades; dramatic change in personality, hair color is altered, evil spirit inhabiting his body, etc. But the thing is, Kurumada is a hack and inconsistent as fuck, which is why it just latter changed to "Oh no Saga just had a dormant bipolar personality because Kanon was crazy and influenced him shortly before going ape shit himself".

In any case Saga is pretty dynamic. His personality disorder, being the strongest Gold Saint, batshit insane, and complete belief in his strength (plus if you count tie-ins from Episode G and prequel side stories with other Gods seeing how important Saga is as a Godkiller), its makes sense he believes he can defend the Earth from ayylmaos and illegal mexicans.

What, there's like a huge difference in how the fight goes down in the manga vs the anime with the trio vs Shaka. In both versions, Saga, Shura, and Camus don't want to fight Shaka. Shaka instigates the fight and blocks them until they are forced to fight him. Shaka then says in the manga, even *he* can't defeat two other Gold Saints. Saga then gets involved, getting behind Shaka and hitting him with AD, Shaka nearly dies from this and then says if he' shit with AD again, he won't come back or would die (TL is kind of rough there either way a second time would be very bad). That's all Saga does in the fight that's 90% Shaka vs Camus and Shura. Then the three tell Shaka to leave, then Shaka uses Tenbu Horin and starts stripping their senses while the trio are standing around trying to use non-violent means, finally after losing five of their senses they use AE and kill him.

Also Aiolia was literally owned by Saga who didn't even use his Gold Cloth while he was still masquerading as the Grand Pope and was mind-controlled by the Genro Maoken technique Saga uses.

There are attempts of a SS revival through the 90s and even a CD drama, Do Cvidanja, along merchandise and projects like Fuma no Kojiro and Babel II kinda count I guesss so it's not like the franchise was completely forgotten. I think there was a copyright issue with Kurumada leaving for Shonen Ace after the Silent Knight Sho fiasco

Ten years into Kurumada's death I want a competent director/writer/scriptwriter to pick up SS and make the great story Saint Seiya deserves.

I hate it because
1) I liked that Shun was an effeminate fuck. Sure, I would have preferred it if he did not get prancing lala homo man levels of effeminate, and stayed mysterious and thoughtful all the time, but nothing is perfect I guess.
2) I hate the whole HAHA GIRLS LIKE PINK LET'S MAKE THE PINK ONE A GIRL undertone.
3) They could have given more spotlight to Shaina, Marin and Athena instead of changing Shun. It would have been so cool.
4) I really liked that for once there was an all male team who was emotional and open about their feelings. You usually don't see a group of guys in anime crying together so intensely like in Saint Seiya. It's always refreshing to see wholesome and heartful friendships like the ones between the bronzies.
Making Shun a girl would take a bit from that.
5) I dislike Smurfette syndrome, it makes the inclusion of a girl feel forced and done just to have a girl rather than a character who is female.

In case you ask, I am a fujo, but not much for Saint Seiya characters. I really like the friendships (and I honestly dislike how Shun warms Hyoga in the anime, it's unfiltered bait).
The only gay couple I like in it is Aldebaran x Mu and that is certainly not popular, because Aldebaran is ugly.
