Im not saying "downhill" in the sense that I didnt like CA, but more about the follow up and quality of the story from here on. My major complain is the pace during the invasion of the palace, something that probably worked better on the manga, since it shows a lot of things happening at the same time

It couldn't have been done differently. The way Madhouse did it was the only way. You need to re-watch this arc at least 3 or 4 times in order to understand the greatness of it.

Well, then I suggest you don't pick up the manga because the narrative formula is very similar to the Chimera Ant (long build-up, multiple POVs, a lot of new introduced characters etc), but on steroids.

There werw plenty of other ways. They could have cut some redundant lines, added surreal rwpresentations of the character thoughts in the background to make the monologues more interesting, or have some of the thoughts just flash in the screen like in the Monogatari series.
