Funny thing, when I watched it as a kid, I wasn't that upset when Bernie died. However, when I rewatched it two years back on Christmas, I fucking bawled my eyes out.

Wish I was home rn to show you, but I have the colored manga adaptation of the ova sitting in my room with a bunch of other 80s mecha artbooks and cds. I spent a lot of time and money early college in trying to get my hands on everything related to gundam and patlabor.
I'm pretty burnt out of the mecha genre now, but I like to look back and appreciate the enjoyment I have gotten out of it.

Plus, it's kinda awkward to think that out of all the anime I've watched, 0080 has had the greatest impact on me-- esp because Al reminds me of myself when I was younger. Spent a lot of my hs years wanting to join the military just because my dad was also in the army, and it took me a few years to realize that I just thought it looked cool but wasn't thinking about the risks and benefits. idk memes.

This. Outside of contrarian shitposters, I think it's mostly sociopaths who don't get why this movie is so well regarded and successful. Top notch audiovisuals, simple but captivating story, characters you want to root for. It's not a revolutionary movie, just extremely well crafted by some of the best talents in the industry. Definitely in top 10 of this decade.
