But that's mostly the point of the Smiles in the first place, you get your shitters and turn them into fodder+. Instead of just completely useless you get an army of people that may actually be of some use. Gazelleman and Batman were prime examples of this even being just fodder their enhanced speed and hearing could have some good use. In a large scale battle having hundreds of these guys instead of just regular idiots with swords would make an actual palatable difference, to handle regular minion work they may excel at it, to face strong opponents they get destroyed all the same. You will probably get a few Smile users that are actually competent, like the warden but you shouldnt take a user as a strong opponent at face value. Plus the point of this chapter was to show that this former legend isnt completely out yet, and we know that age doesnt mean anything, in One Piece your willpower is actually directly connected to your strength via Haki and Hyo just had his will restored by Luffy's action AND he was only able to land a hit and not be cut to ribbons thanks to Luffy's guidance.

Luffy vs that shark fag was just a display of his new power, as was Caesar who showed Luffy's new prowess with haki.
You don't understand story progression at all. We are told that Luffy has improved over 2 years, and we were shown that. We were also shown how that even was still just a bridge to the more powerful enemies in the One Piece world. The payoff came in Dressrosa, when Luffy was able to beat an extremely strong enemy after being forced to blow through his best moves.
This leads on perfectly to Big Mom, showing that Luffy can still not damage these absolute beasts, but he has enough grunt to just about beat commanders. The next stage, this arc will be his crew taking on the commanders to grow their own strength, and Luffy - along with allies - will finally be able to do some damage to a Yonkou. Though it will be shown that he absolutely cannot do it on his own, and I'm sure that if Kaido does go down, it will be because of Big Mom
So the arc after that, Luffy is at the strength of being able to beat commanders comfortably and growing able to damage Yonkou. Perfect progression for another jump where he can become halfway able to harm a Yonkou. This sets the stage for a conflict against the tougher Marines, Shanks, BB, without it being a one sided affair. It is a big spike in power levels compared to what One Piece used to be, but its clear that Oda is trying to make the journey shorter because of how long OP has been going for already. For me, it works

How on earth did black beard gave shanks the scar? Looking back, Shanks already had his scar back then in ch1 Romance Dawn, when Luffy was a kid. Which means back then Ace was not in the white beard pirates yet (since he sailed at Luffy's age 16). Therefore Black beard didn't have the yami yami no mi, since Ace was in Thatch crew when Black beard stole the fruit. Hody having zero substance behind his hatred is one of the best reveals a villain's had in the series and a perfect encapsulation of the arc's message.

Good stuff. Albasta is an all-time favorite for the quality and nostalgia. First time as a kid I saw a protag really struggle. Robin did things to me back then as well, but Perona ultimately won that game.
