Overall Overlord had better animation than Konosuba, though. Especially insofar as S1 and the worker arc of S3 was concerned. Like, yeah, it was still garbage, but Madhouse only went full trash during the scenes with CGI. Konosuba was just pretty terrible throughout. Though I certainly appreciated the anime director's fetish for saggy titties. Good taste.

Not really. The CGI was awful, yes; hilariously bad, even; but that was not the biggest issues with the scene by a long shot. CGI was going to be inevitable with those numbers especially when one considers the budget and the modern industry standards. But aside from the CGI, the scenes suffered from extremely horrid direction. The battle on the plains, for instance, has absolutely no gore, has comically bright lighting, and is all shot at a flat, boring angle with nothing interesting going on - nothing at all to visually portray the mayhem of a chaotic slaughter. It's boring. The models of the sheep themselves weren't really so bad, honestly - the animations were horrible, yes, but the models themselves were ok. It's just that you recognize the flaws in the modeling and animations even more when it's all taking place in a brightly lit, flat direction mentality. They could have easily have covered the ground with gore (like it was in the source material art), had a dark overcast filter or something similar (to not only add to the atmosphere but mask the poorer details of the CGI), or utilized angles which masked the poor animations/models whilst also visually conveying chaos. I would be willing to forgive god-awful CGI and animations if they at least got the spirit of the scene correct, but they didn't even manage, nor try, to do that.

Not really. If you're creative with your direction you shoot close in to give a crowded vibe and maybe showcase the absolute horror of what's happening. You darken the whole scene up when the baby goats arrive so you don't have to be as detailed on the fringes and bamo, you don't need to CGI much, if at all.

I'd imagine if CG was absolutely necessary it'd be possible to just have it limited to characters in the background and maybe have a blur effect over them to hide the fact that they're CG and make it look like they're just fighting off in the distance

Nah, that would be Re:Zero which does a pretty good job of doing so by replacing the usual overpowered and super intelligent MC with a perfectly average NEET who's probably one of the weakest characters in the series and who's closest thing to a cheat ability is a groundhogs day effect that for the most part leaves him deeply traumatized from experiencing constant agonizing deaths and seeing the people he loves and cares about suffer gruesome deaths. It essentially takes a genre where the setting is focused on wish fulfillment and replaces it with one you really wouldn't want to be in because chances are you'd fucking die horribly.

I'll admit i'm not super familiar with overlord, but he DID just see a goddess show up, deal heavy damage to him (and nearly KO an ally) with a very basic spell, only to see that godess beaten up and dragged away by a weak-looking adventurer type.

It's reasonable to say he's liable to be cautious, and even more reasonable to say he's completely confused.

To think of it, Akatsuki is on fire. This year he will technically have 2 anime adaptation and 1 movie for the least. Also, Konosuba S3 will happen eventually.

Ainz-sama felt there was no need to dodge such a weak spell. A risky move once you consider he isn't equipped with his anti-holy equipment. However, Ainz-sama still decided to take Aqua's「Turn Undead」head on. Knowing full well that if anything went wrong, he would fall back, and allow his loyal subordinates to finish the job.

The moment Ainz-sama was hit by Aqua's「Turn Undead」, he was simply surprised such a spell could even tickle him. Feeling a slight tingle throughout his bones after the effects of「Turn Undead」were resisted. Though only slightly fazed by this attack, Ainz-sama deceived that foolish goddess by acting as if he had been injured. Feeling the goddess was no threat to him, he decided to show mercy by not retaliating. He even managed to hold back Mare from going on the offensive.

Shalltear on the other hand was simply caught off guard. She was too careless, and foolishly believed her passive spell resistance would be enough to resist Aqua's「Turn Undead」. She was too prideful to use「Greater Teleportation」to dodge, and didn't want to use her daily skill,「Time Reverse」to negate any damage done to her.

As you can see, this encounter was all thought out according to Ainz-sama's brilliance. I can't even fathom the preparations he has made for the next 100 years.

The constant exposition dumps are a significant weakness of the series and the writer does indeed need to learn how to show instead of telling.

To be clear, my comment wasn't aimed at translations. It's aimed at LNs. It's just that I've only ever read translations of LNs, so I don't want to blame LNs for something that might be the fault of their translation.

My point still stands. There are always cases of LN being better, just as there are always cases of a manga being better, or an anime being better. Same goes with whether a fan translator is better, a localization company is better, etc etc. It's always a case by case basis.

Anyone who thinks otherwise just has a terrible sample size aka their own personal experience coupled with their own ignorance, which ranges heavily from turbo EOP that might not even know English properly to knowing some moon runes themselves and cross checking. Relying on simply what you've read and watched isn't grounds to make sweeping statements, as much as Yea Forums encourages people to be retarded it doesn't change the fact that it's still a retarded thing to do, especially when this image board proves time and time again that when people keep pretending to be retarded they genuinely end up retarded after it becomes a habit.

Just remember, 9/10 professional translators on the scene today were formerly amateurs who did it for free for the longest time. This applies to anime/manga/LN, so it's all the same shit. The only difference is whether they were any good or not and whether they kept their quality.

Prose is a language thing, any work that uses another languages prose in effect will be very hard to translate over since it's the equivalent of porting over games from one OS to another and expecting everything to be fine. It only looks that way from a layman's perspective because one doesn't understand just how much change and adaptation under the hood one needs to go from one OS to another, and for languages like going from Nip/Gook/Chink to English it's not a matter of Linux/Mac to Windows it's more like homebrew OS written from scratch being ported over, so naturally prose will feel 'unnatural'.

To begin with, prose is a tool, a tool to let you understand better and appreciate the writing more. But for most litfags it's very apparent that the more you focus on prose the more you also limit the way you can appreciate writing, just like how someone who grew up with French cuisine might have a hard time accepting Japanese cuisine being able to rival their Michelin stars despite having tried their top restaurants. Having a more narrow exclusive palette doesn't make you more refined, it simply means your brain is only capable of appreciating the structured prose that you've learned.

Prose IS a tool, and one which is employed by writers. If it's used badly, then the work is worsened for it. Note that I'm not talking about prose which is different from whatever you imagine my normal experience is. I'm talking about prose that's just bad. Often, it's very similar to pulpy American novels or stuff you can find on the internet, actually.

It doesn't negate anything I've posted. Translation is a case by case basis, just because it worked on one book doesn't mean it'll work just as well on another if given the same effort and vice versa.

That's my point. These things are merely subjective and have no real objective value to be accessed. The only objectivity in prose would be for non-fiction, and the only value to be critiqued would be how accurate and how concise the lines are so that they can convey the information required by the reader. It is the same reason business reports in the past 100 years have changed drastically and instead of line after line of fluff we have bullet points and hard numbers, because the goal (at least for the audience, the presenter may obviously want to skew opinions with certain techniques as he would have his own objectives) is simply to understand. That is something measurable. Judging something to be pulpy and therefore inferior or common is not objective, it's merely a subjective standard, aka one's taste.

I won't make any claims for you, since you never shared anything to be accessed, but the resident moralfags on Yea Forums tend to be a shining example because unless 10/10 of them are shit posters, then whichever ones genuinely believe their train of thought tend to be unable to separate their modern western society values from a fictional story for even a moment. I am not criticizing them for their beliefs nor values, I am simply pointing out how they just lack the ability to think and perceive differently, that they can only enjoy things a certain way no matter how much a story might imply that one should be viewing it from a wider, if not different perspective.

It is certainly possible to argue against my post and try to instill some 'common consensus' on what constitutes good writing / good prose / good characters and what not, but ultimately what doing that means is you're trying to impose subjective values as objective simply on the grounds of a select criteria, criteria which others may not agree with to begin with. Even in real life, appreciating and accessing a person, interacting with people, is mainly subjective. If one's understanding and relation with another person is therefore subjective, how can anyone claim objective judgment upon a fictional person?

Anime - manga - LN
LN is the most detailed and covers more characters and points of view, but might be hard to chew through for someone new to the series.
Manga is getting close to where the anime ended. Has a little more of what people are thinking, which adds a lot to the comedy.
Anime is action heavy and mostly surface level information.

This isn't a conversation about whether art is objective or subjective; either way, whether objectively or subjectively, I think that LNs (at least in English) are of bad quality. We can get into how there is essentially no distinction between objective and subjective, but I don't think that's necessary.

You very much seem like you have a chip on your shoulder. You've assumed that I think the writing was bad because it was pulpy. In fact, I thought the writing was bad, and because I think pulp writing often fails in the same ways, I drew a comparison.

And now you're bringing up moralfaggotry and modern western standards or whatever. user, one of my favourite books is about a bunch of medieval Chinks beating the shit out of people for sometimes moral and usually very tenuously moral reasons.
