I always wonder how anime gradually gained a following in the West back in the day. How were people motivated to peruse material like this without the internet? Just because it's weird/cult?

How does Yea Forums do it? Even with all it's flaws it still manages to maintain a level of quality far above the other media boards.

Because we loved it. That's it. We used to go through extraordinary lengths just to see an episode of anime or read a chapter of manga. We had a real passion for the story, art and style of Japanese media. The fandom mostly consisted of sci-fi nerds who loved Star Trek.

RIP

A lot of it spread through word of mouth on college campuses, where most of the early influential anime clubs came from. Otherwise it got a following through the Western comics fans who were open to reading niche or foreign comics, foreign film buffs, and all kinds of other nerd fandoms like says.

Howd they book those A listers back then?

According to the top and bottom credits, Gainax was one of the sponsors, so maybe it was a promotional kind of tour for them.

Johji Manabe is a fucking legend.

34 years old who has been watching anime since he has memory here.
I just came here to say that I'm not interested on participating on these threads; they are never good or constructive, being just a reunion of bitter, nostalgic people repeating "old good, new bad" ad nauseam. Same with the pre-2000 and "aesthetics" threads.

That's all.

Okay, zoomer.

It helped that the 80s otaku behind the OVA boom were also gigantic American sci-fi fags. The reciprocal fandom really helped make Japanimation a thing over here. Add that to manga like Rapeman getting popular in the comix culture, and it just had a subversive cool.

Japanimation gets me every time

I think we should return to using the term Japanimation. Maybe even Japanime.

When Urotsukidōji hit the shelves the term "Japornimation" was born. Overfiend could also be found at Blockbuster video on the children's section next to Mickey Mouse and Max Steele's Robo Force. Why? Because it is a fucking cartoon that is fucking why.

Dark Horse is partly to blame.

This is literally how I discovered pornography as a child. They would have hentai VHS covers just out in the open with all sorts of R-18 images plastered on them. I also remember my local bookstore had Dance Till Tomorrow (Asatte Dance) out in the open. I read it and was astonished to see "cartoon" characters having full blown sex. Holy shit!

I had the chance to go to that con.
A group of old school weeb friends were going and invited me along. I wasn't into anime at the time. I had seen things like Astro Boy, Star Blazers and Robotech. But those were just "cartoons" to me.
I declined.
It was only a year later that I saw Nadia for the first time. I haven't stopped regretting not going.

>The titles that make it to American comics-shop shelves have passed through a battery of filters designed to strain out the junk and allow only the best work being produced in Japan
What a load of shit. 90% of the manga we got back in that day was absolute trash plebeian shit aside from a few rare titles.

Outfuckingstanding.

My first glimpse of cartoon lewds was from the old GTC (Galactic Trade Commission) mimeographed/xeroxed 30 page "catalog" that sold mecha kits and vhs bootlegs of shit. That catalog had like smeared and stained nsfw B+W images with giant ink fingerprints on them. I wonder what ever happened to GTC. It was like a dude in Kansas or something that filled his barn up with merch and bootlegs.

He's trying to sell comics to hipsters. You gotta decode the shpeal.

Ah, back when we had to put our shitposting in print because the internet was still in its infancy.

I fucked your mother when she was still hot, zoomer.
