However, what they've actually been doing is taking existing meds, mod the recipe just a little, file new patent and claim it's new product rather than actually dev new meds. Also, in recent years, plenty of firms make more money out of corporate shit like mergers/acquisitions rather than actually investing in dev of new med.

The main problem resulting in high prices in the USA, Japan, and Europe is that the companies NEED to make their profits in those areas. Other places in the world ignore patents such as Mexico, South America (argentina), africa, and Asia. In those other parts of the world, companies ignore the patents and manufacture copies of the drugs for sale. So that increases the prices of the legit drug because of the loss of volume sales to the rest of the world.
