This caused me to look up the real heroes of the Battle of Britain, on which the loli catgirl witches with BFGs were based, and I found that those who fought the Battle of Britain really were manly, much more manly than moderns.

I've said that numerous times as well, but that doesn't mean manga style conveys to screen well with just 1:1 approach, you have to take into consideration various other things when creating anime.
The art direction is bad and cheap and that's a fact even if panel wise it's like the manga.
Kill Me Baby is a good example of well adapted 4-koma manga show that's also 1:1 but it barely ever got criticism because it was well done all around with good direction. There are lots of nuances to how to adapt things.

He's not widely regarded because people like him rarely are. He's just a guy who flew well. All of his tricks are just basic bf109 doctrine. Stalk your opponent and dive down on him and fire at the last second so he has no chance. Boring compared to people like Nishizawa or Thatch, latter of which wrote his doctrines on dogfighting vs. zeros and is remembered by history as result. People who just perform exceptionally well don't deserve specific recognition and it's probably best that only the history geeks know of them since it's already bad enough 99% of people have no clue about some of the best commanders or figureheads in their military history. Learning names like Hartmann or Häyhä would just confuse them even more.
