I'm not sure what everyone's problem with YKA is. It had less pacing and narrative problems than MPD, and similar depth in characterization and themes despite the latter having twice the runtime.

I think that the characters in YKA don't have the time to be fully realized as individual characters and are instead more symbolic of life experiences. That is to say, they have depth but lack detail, save for maybe Lulu. I personally don't have a problem with characters like that, especially in a very short series that is carried more by everything else in it, but I can see why people criticize it. That said, I think a lot of people genuinely did miss a lot of what made YKA great and only focus on why it's not exactly like the others before it.

Sumika and Ginko were really dry characters. Lulu was good though.

I think MPD was overated. Thematically is a mess.

The YKA characters were fucking awful and almost ruined the show. They are so obviously worse than any of Ikuharas other characters that I don't think its even worth arguing about. I think the boys from Sarazanmai who have had all of 5 lines have more charisma than the shit that was YKA.

What makes you think the ending won’t be hopeful here? The novel only covers through episode 6 and 2/3 of Ikuhara’s shows had pretty happy endings. Enta’s feelings may remain unrequited (though I don’t even think that’s a guarantee) but not every Ikuhara character in unrequited love is doomed to suffer forever. The characters are pretty young here too which might lead to him being gentler on them.

Just let them drop the show or there will be whining the entire season.

Is it selling well? Besides shocked reactions, the hype seems pretty middling, though I guess it’s because the content is pretty out there even for Ikuhara.

Ikuhara gets worshiped just for being Ikuhara, to such an extent that no one can ever criticize anything in his works. He has some good ideas and his shows are fun to watch but his fans can be the equivalent of Rick and Morty fans sometimes.

But they want their happy homo to be canon. That’s why they scream that their shitty head canons are 100% real and if you don’t agree your racist/homophobic/transphobic. I’m kind of tempted to check out tumblr just for how upset people are going to be.

Most of the people who watched DD! were Tiger & Bunny fans though, the DD! artists on pixiv and twitter draw mostly T&B and YOI so that isn't a fair statement.
Besides, Tiger & Bunny is still an ongoing story so things can still go wrong when heroes have life-threatening jobs; that doesn't change the fact that the studio supports the lead m/m ship in T&B though.
The salty fans are few in number and the rest of the fans were indifferent and didn't even bother to watch DD! in the first place.

Ikuhara is great in a team, providing the creative drive with other people making sure it’s tight and actually somewhat followable. He does get into loldeep and abstract stuff that really works best when pared back just a little bit.

Honestly I don’t think a lot of people pay attention when watching stuff, or just completely misinterpreted what’s going on.

While Penguindrum needed a lot more focus, and honestly I personally wouldn’t call it a total masterpiece, it is one of my favorite anime of all time. Like there are a lot of really good ideas there that are executed pretty well. Honestly Ikuhara just needs someone who like can force feed him Adderall and make him fucking focus or an editor who can lock him out of the room while they work and give his stuff more focus.
