exactly. if they followed the original too closely they would just play into the repetitive trope that's boring now (that wasn't at the time of the manga because it was the father of it, so it worked in that context).

while it could be argued hyakki is still a trope in the new anime to some degree, it's less tiresome than if he was the manga personality in a current year anime.

and considering how they've written his disabilities and development from them in the new anime, it makes sense he isn't the shonen trope of his manga version.
