Nu Nagatoro strikes me more as a girl who knows what she's doing, and why, but lacks the courage to be more direct about her feelings so she tries to goad senpai into doing her job for her, he probably will.

Not that I dislike the manga or think Nagatoro 2.0 is a bad or even that much of a different character, in fact I think there's a lot that's very striking. I like both. To me Manga Nagatoro is the same as the old Nagatoro but this time she's got a little more self control. In the old series it looked like she had pretty much zero self control. She knew she was going way too far but couldn't stop herself.

The manga might be going the way of the typical romcom series but I'm not all that bothered. It's nice seeing Senpai develop and it's nice seeing the interactions between the friends. Original Nagatoro but only from the specific imageset pictured in the OP, the other sets were kind of trashy or weird, but that one was amazing. I think that's going a bit far, painting Nanashi as being insincere or disingenuous. In the grand scheme of things even OG Nagatoro is a more palatable and tame concept coming from a former guro artist specializing in creative breast mutilation.

Tastes change and often mellow out over time. It's been the better part of a decade since the OG image sets and it'd be unreasonable to expect an author to keep the character concept entirely static.

I know I used to be into a lot more wicked stuff than I am now, can't begrudge Nanashi for going through the same.

I would've kept her sadism intact. She would have to struggle throughout the manga to keep her sadistic urges under control. Have her get too excited and just barely cross the line into downright cruelty, only for her to have an epiphany of self-awareness and pull back before her facade of normalcy is entirely broken.

Tactically I think this writing choice would've worked better because now her character is much deeper while also providing plenty of hints for doujin authors to step up and give us proper sadism on the side.
