This. Almost all Akatsuki were screwed by shinobi system. Pain and Konan were war orphans and lived in third world shithole thanks to world war started by big villages, Kisame was forced to kill his teammates, Kakuzu was imprisoned for losing battle with demigod, Sasori lost parent in shinobi war and went insane, Deidara was not appreciated in the village because of his long range style of fighting. Itachi, whose life was ruined by the Konoha's elders, most likely felt comfortable among people with a similar fate, that's why so he went over to their side.
