HxH is a simultaneous critique and defense of human nature. The social critic is based on real world events. That flashback after the Rose Bomb explosion was a reference to the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombing. Then they actually referred to a real event when talking about the ban on the Rose Bomb, which happened between Nixon and Brezhnev, it only stopped the production of new nukes, but they could keep the ones they already had. Just like what happened in the HxH world.

Furthermore, Hunter x Hunter thematizes proxy wars, inequality, social castes, dictatorships, nuclear warfare, economic and financial problems, that's why the worldbuilding feels so realistic. This level of social critic to the problems we face in our world will never be found in any other series, let alone shonen. Some of the panels you see in that page are taken from real life events.

You have to have a very high IQ to understand HunterXHunter. The theming is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of Nen’s mechanics, most of the fights will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Gon’s unique outlook on morality, which is deftly woven into his characterization - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Machiavelli's The Prince, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these characters and battles, to realize that they’re not just epic or cool- they say something deep about LIFE in this rich, vibrant world Togashi has created. As a consequence people who dislike HunterXHunter truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the subtlety and drama in Killua overcoming his own hesitation and growing as a character by ripping his brother’s controlling needle out of his head, which itself is a brilliant parallel to the writings of Takuhan Soho. When you think about it, there might be more similarities between Stain and Marx than meets the eyes, and that's their utter lack of understanding about human psychology and society as a whole.
The idea of compelling heroes, aka "public servants", to accept honor and fame rather than materialistic rewards as compensation like knights in medieval times would never fly in any society, let alone this "disgustingly fake and gay" hero society he so loaths. It may be nice that he doesn't always go after bankers and politicians to build his perfect society, but to instead punish hero for "following their instincts" to reshape the world in his own image, one herofag at a time, only endless suffering awaits him.
It's nice to think that if only every living bean could just ditch all of their desires and needs while striving for a common goal, we could actually have nice thing for Once. But We Don't, because human/mutants aren't lifeless robots afterall, are they?
The game has always been rigged against him from the very beginning. The fact that he chose to be Batman will not solve the systemic structure that wronged him one bit.
Then again, Stain could just be hiding ulterior motives of his own. But who could ever know? It's really hard to justify a character as anything but a single-minded ideologue in a children's manga, isn't it?

that the thing that most struck me most about Hunter x Hunter is how the entire Chimera Ant arc felt like one long work of literature, like a 19th century baroque novel or a Shakespearean tragedy. It's rife with symbolism, irony, themes, and felt appropriately mature and tonally rich. Some of the passages spoken by the narrator were so memorable and beautiful (e.g. the humans in the sky line), and the narration served to create the feeling that I was reading some intricate tapestry of prose. I loved how tragic and anticlimactic the death of Meruem was, because it was richly meaningful in tandem with the themes presented by the arc; and it's because of this that I speak of him in the same way I do as Macbeth, or Oedipus, or John Milton's Lucifer. Some scenes, like the match-cut of the boots stomping on the insects between the Rose bomb used on human cities spoke to me on a visceral level, just as Classic Lit does.

Redestro could be compared to a modern day Peter Kropotkin, a man who understands that humans should band together for mutual support, while also recognizing that each individual deserves the freedom to decide for themselves their own path

I don't think HxH is perfect apart from Yorknew, it's just that the parts that are imperfect, like some of the pacing and drawing, are so fucking minor when it has a barrage of 12/10 climaxes that blow everything else out of the water. It's like laser-focusing on episode 25 and 26 of NGE to criticize EVA when End of Evangelion is right there in front of you, or episode 4 of Gurren Lagann when episode 8, 15, and 26 are in the same show. When a show has something on the level of episode 85 of Hunter x Hunter, which it then tops it with 91, which it then tops with 108, which it then tops with 116, which it then tops with 126, which it then tops with 131, which it then blows out of the water with 135... man, the bland miniarc with Knuckles and Shoot vs Gon and Killua and the mid-section of the palace invasion being kind of slow doesn't matter. You may have a few 5/10s but you also have more 15/10s in there than any other series.

Gon and Killua training is actually great, what the fuck's your problem? They're the only shounen characters who training actually matters, and seeing Gon's retarded moral code not really work for once is a welcome improvement and sets up for the Super Saiyan moment at the palace.
Also iirc we get the confirmation that Gon's a milfhunter and the "you are light" scene at this time which are both excellent.

HxH is an action manga. Without training Gon and Killua wouldn't survive in the HxH world. Every Hunter needs to be strong.

Imagine having an opinion this shitty. HxH isn't Dragonball, it's not about having constant fights and power escalation. It's about character ideologies and the clash between people's ideals and the real world. Chimera Ant Arc is probably the most explicit example of this next to Yorknew City Arc, so showing how far Gon and Killua are willing to go to preserve their ideologies in the face of a reality that completely denies that those ideologies are valid is more important than seeing Gon punch someone real hard.

HxH escalates easy from a classical shounen and RPG (introducing aspects that were by the time it was written not that cannonical of the genre, like auctioning) to a drama war dealing with very well thought out questions about humanity, never falling into too-chauvinistic solutions or excessive deus ex-machina (I still don't believe anybody can enjoy Dragon Ball Z or whatever due to narrative prowess...) .

Giorgio Agamben would be proud of what HxH has managed to do. I read and watch a lot of things in many languages, but really, few things have left in my soul such a print as this anime.

I place it among some of my personal favorites such as La saga/fuga de J.B., Ulysses, Il barone rampante, Simplicius Simplicissimus, Gargantua et Pantagruel, etc. The meaning of HxH is self-contained in the words of Gin. Life is about the road, the small detours, the process. An anime/manga that feels like a beating heart when reading is a very hard thing to achieve and it has all my respects, because he managed to make a very commercially driven genre such as battle shounen into a fine example of ol' good baroque anti-hero adventure novel.

Kurapika's offscreen training worked because his abilities come down to his singular character motivation, killing the Phantom Troupe. His chains are as strong as they are because of that motivation, so seeing him learn the techniques is unimportant.
Gon and Killua don't have that going for them, they need to individually overcome obstacles by becoming better actual fighters and applying themselves to the situation at hand.
