Goku even mentions it when Vegeta dies. His pride was bigger than his love for his race, which Goku finds somewhat respectable apparently, as he asks to feel some of that Saiyan pride as he fights Freeza

Bullshit, King Piccolo was jobbing hard against Goku the final battle and had to use Tenshinhan as a meatshield to even inflict serious damage on Goku, and then he still got BTFO in one attack

I know Dragon Ball is mostly an action manga about karate guys punching each other to death, but people sleep on Toriyama's writing.

I always thought this was a great way to end Goku's big fight with Frieza. Goku always wanted to give his enemies a second chance, but Frieza smacked his hand away. Everything Goku is thinking is right there on his face without having to say a word.

Vegeta doesn't give a fuck about actual saiyans, just the concept of them as an illustrious warrior race in regards to himself and how it factors into his own legend. He'd kill Nappa, Raditz, Kakkarot or Tarble in a heartbeat if it proved convenient for him personally, and then give a speech about his lineage and how he's the best of the best. Because it's all about Vegeta. This is before he softens up of course. And even then he doesn't really give a shit about the saiyan population beyond his social circle and muh heritage.
