This manga was never meant to be totally lighthearted, but before that it mostly explored problems that directly arose from its premise. From this point on instead, it also started adding overly tragic backstories and other unnecessarely depraved and mean stuff.

And he didn't just kill criminals with the note, he also killed a lot of innocent people along with the way. The way it's handled in the manga, aside from the Near stuff, was exactly the kind of end Light deserved

I agree. Seeing Thorkell again was great, the stuff with Iron Chain Halfdan was fun and Hild is cool. Despite that the arc really had too much going on in a short amount of time and it went a little too far over the top (Garm killing his entire village as a child and Ymir the monster man specifically).
