How's this been? I watched the first few episodes and enjoyed it enough, but never kept up with it. Is it just MotW through and through?

It's pretty much MotW but the episodes tie into the over-arching plot which just wrapped up recently, and now it's onto a new theme. There's another self-contained arc a dozen episodes or so ago that was kinda boring, but besides that it's been great.

That, and they'll have to use those kind of episodes, because there are only 5 enemies remaining in this arc (the remaining 3 Generals, Rei and whoever freed the Generals). Arc would be over too fast if they had every episode be about a Treasonous General

From what I understand, Kitaro simply defeats the Yokai and their souls go to hell. Rei on the other hand kills the Yokai and then absorbs their souls to become stronger.

Kitaro leaves their souls complete, so they go to hell. The only Yokai "deaths" we've seen are the Malaysian Yokai and Nekomusume, and the later got better.

I'm reading the comics for the first time, and I'm confused. Is there a reboot between the one called Kitaro's Night Tales and the ones after?
Kitaro's personality seemed to change from just surviving to helping people ailled by spirits, he went from just above a human that can't die to having blatant superpowers, and got a theme song. Also some of the encounters seem similar like Water Tiger to Water God and Vampire Trees.

There are actually various Kitaro reboots. Mizuki had a great imagination and certain strong messages he wanted to convey, but he also loved money. He adapted Kitaro to what he saw people liked the most various times. The early Kitaro comics are completely different from later Kitaro. They were adapted to anime in 2008 or 2009 as Hakaba Kitaro

Kitaro's Night Tales ran on Garo (google it if you haven't heard of it to get a gist of the demographic), the ones after are from shounen magazines. They ran concurrently at least for a while. It's confusing just because the English scanlations combine them under one so-called continuity. Night Tales is a direct remake of the rental manga talks of, the shounen chapters reused some ideas from the rental manga but since Mizuki ended up remaking Night Tales anyway they show up several times between different Kitaros.
