We saw this when Dio first entered the household and set about to undermine Jonathan's standing as the favored son. The whole subtext of Phantom Blood is that Dio helped Jonathan grow and Jonathan helped Dio grow, which culminated in Dio's head admitting that he never gave Jonathan enough credit, and both recognizing that they would have amounted to nothing without each other.

yeah thats it. we don't see what the trauma was but it irrevocably broke him in half, and when the pieces were put back together what came out was not a single person that wanted to thrive but a 'system' that wanted to thrive

The wiki has chosen the latter to be her “true” birthday, but there are some very fundamental issues that arise if you go by that.

One of the few solid dates in her (and her parents') past is the date on which Diavolo took that picture of Donatella on the beach - June 1985 (late June, as we later find out). If we believe her birthday to be in June, it would actually mean that Trish was already born and 2-3 weeks old at the moment this photo was taken. This draws further implications:

1) Instead of a short-term summer romance (or autumn romance, since they should have gotten serious in October to have a child in June?), Dia and Dona had to see each other over a long time

2) Even if he was not the sharpest crayon in the box, as he was often described in his youth, Dia would have had to notice SOME changes going on with his girlfriend

3) Donatella was still together with Diavolo at the time the village burned (the anime seems to go by that, but they messed with plenty of dates already).

All of this sounds rather implausible as we know how their relationship actually played out.

However, if we take Trish's birthday to be in April 1986, a lot more of the details fit into place. Then, Dona and Dia would actually have met on a summer vacation. Trish would probably be conceived not long after that picture was taken, and Donatella would have left Sardinia before Dia's village burned next year. Why didn't Dona start looking for her boyfriend immediately after discovering she was pregnant, nobody knows but her.

Anyway, today has to be Trish's true birthday.

Hell, part of the character's charm is being an awkward boy with a violent devil inside him. So to say that Doppio is some innocent cinnamon roll just reeks of tumblr fanfiction. I'd equate Diavolo's situation to that of Red Dragon's Francis Dolarhyde. Both have a timid personality on the outside with a split personality attributed to a devil on the inside (the "Dragon"). Even then, I don't treat Dolarhyde's situation as different characters and I sure as hell don't find him innocent.

If you truly believe that Araki intended for part 1 Dio to have all that depth behind his character, then that's up to you to interpret. But I and most others see only the simple route, which is much more likely for a shonen battle manga.
