I assume they decided it needed drama, even if it ruined the story and characters.
It wouldn't have been quite as annoying if they were at least a bit consistent instead of switching personalities every episode.
I still found it impossible to dislike Ayano in the anime considering they spent 5 episodes shitting on her.
