It's not because it's monthly. There's plenty of monthly manga out there that progress at a good rate and can keep me hooked every month. But with Snk and OnS the plot just came to a complete standstill. Seemingly important events would happen and then everything goes back to normal for a while. Then another seemingly important event and then nothing again. The plot just doesn't go anywhere.
