The anime's fun because he slowly but surely becomes a huge scumbag. He's supposed to be disliked. It's kind of fun watching a bad character do bad things, and seeing the souring reactions of other characters that eventually build up to have real consequences. Sekai was kind of an ass too, though not nearly as bad as Makoto.

Yeah, the anime adaptation wrote Makoto as a literal "audience surrogate", as in the people that usually play these types of games, and how they would legitimately act if they were in the story themselves. Like taking advantage of the "best female friend actually likes the MC but hides it and helps him win the love interest" trope to just skip to the "good" parts, or literally just fucking around because he knows that his love interest is only loyal to him it doesn't really matter what he does in the long run.
