Is k-on really as bad as everyone says it is?

It depends what you're looking for. There is genuine artistry in this series for those receptive to it. Yamada Naoko is one of the best directors in anime. That being said, the genius in this anime is in the subtle things. If you're just looking for an anime with an exciting plot, K-on might not be for you. Many inattentive viewers have said that this anime lacks a plot and while I can certainly see where they're coming from, they are wrong.

Or if you just want to watch cute girls do cute things and don't care about any of the other shit, then I'm sure you'll have no problem enjoying it.

I'd say some of Yamada Naoko's other works surpass K-On in specific areas, but yeah K-On is definitely the best as a cohesive whole.

Just rewatched the first season again after having only watched it partially a decade ago when it aired.
It's pretty wholesome and cute I guess, still doesn't beat Working! as my favorite comedy/slice of life show though.
Just started the second season today and the new OP/ED kinds of sucks in comparison to the first season.

I personally prefer Non Non Biyori since I'm fond of the country and childhood elements but I wouldn't argue if anyone said K-On was the best SoL show.

K-On! is good, but it's nothing special, there are much better shows made before and after it

Ritsu is a bitch but other than that it is usually good. One problem I found was I know this happens in many anime but the entire school acting as if they exist only to help the Keion-bu was cheesy "Yui ganbatte!!" etc.
