Just an artistic choice. In cases like this the author believes in deformation and over-exaggeration as a narrative resource to accentuate an emotion. Usually, but not exclusively, used in comedy with superdeformed faces or just hilarious jokes like a character eats a lot. Clearly, the author thought that you can use the same trick in a "dramatic" or "emotional" moment.
