Shinji is a good kid, basically motivated to do right, doesn't trust himself to know what that is and convinced he can't be wanted after his father left him with a disinterested teacher to raise some other child. Rei approaches something like admiration for humanity and still doesn't engage with it, she knows on some level it's wrong for her to exist, she's died before and she'll be brought back again. Asuka's a sweet girl grown up bitter and thorny, she doesn't want to need people like the ones that suddenly decided she wasn't their daughter or could leave her with a replacement mother who could just leave when she wanted. I'd recommend the translated Raising Project game to satisfy that urge to protect, except it fucks their characterization in order to deliver it.

She is supposed to be 28 in Rebuild 3, so being more stable in general makes sense, plus Shikinami was more stable to begin with.

When it comes to Shinji, she is still sore about the whole thing with him doing nothing to help her when she was in Eva-03, which led to the dummy plug injuring her.
Shinji nearly causing the apocalypse to try to save Rei right after doesn't help the impression Shikinami would have.

I find it odd this scene isn't discussed more (though I guess because that would mean discussing the Rebuilds).
Soryu wouldn't be caught dead with any kind of doll or puppet in her possession, and talking to herself shows Shikinami likely has some different issues to work out.

That was the episode after Kaji died. Although she tried to behave normally, she surely had the kneejerk reaction: "Don't get close to anyone, because it always ends in tragedy." The only people she's gotten close to are Kyoko, Kaji and Shinji, and two of the three died. At that point, especially probably only a day or two after Kaji's death, she was trying to stay distant from Shinji (who could have easily died on any mission, a fact she knows well - or for that matter she could die, leaving him in the same position)

That was just her way of keeping her feelings plausibly deniable. Actually she was constantly wanting to be touched, or more specifically, held, babied - like a mother would a child. We see her crying over the sink because Shinji wouldn't hold her. Her ploy of holding his nose shut during the kiss had nothing to with his breath tickling her, it was just a way to goad him into grabbing her arm and taking charge of the kiss.

They did. We see it in a flashback scene at the beginning of episode 24.
