It's on the realistic side. The only fantasy stuff was Jin-e's hypnosis and Shishio spontaneously combusting.
They made the action a bit on the fantastic side so the weird villains didn't feel too out of place. They're pretty well done.
Series ended with the Jinchu arc as far as I'm concerned. Retconning the perfect ending to make a quick buck is a depth I never thought this series would sink to
To be honest the end of the Jinchuu arc was already declining hard in quality, the Tenchu flashback is the peak of the series.
Everything he did with Kenshin after the ending has felt terrible for me, though. In both art and writing it just feels like something completely different done by some different person.
