Symphogear peaked with the climax of S1. The heroine revival was hype as fuck when it happened, but that combined with the last minute subversion of the prologue completely dispelled all future tension in the series. True enough, nothing significant has happened to the characters since S1. At the end of the last season, Kirika is back on her feet within a few minutes of dropping a Zesshou. Compare against S1 when Kanade bites the dust and Tsubasa sits in a hospital for a few episodes after their Zesshou (coincidentally, Tsubasa's down time also serves to clear the way to put more focus on Hibiki while expanding Chris' role, a balance in characterization which is simply impossible with the addition of the second season cast).
None of the joint songs have been able to match First Love Song either for similar reasons. That was the triumphant culmination of the trio's characterization in the season and none of the following seasons have even come close to having satisfying character arcs. The only joint song that comes close is the Radiant Burst at the start of GX, but that's a great intro scene which basically has nothing to do with the rest of that season.
The dolls were the death knell of Symphogear and very clearly represent everything that is holding the series back. They constantly held their punches instead of presenting meaningful consequences to conflict, bring about wild swings in power level through new bullshit mechanics like arca-noise and ignite, appear and disappear erratically just to shoehorn action scenes into an improperly paced narrative, and bear almost no connection to the main characters.

Extravaganza Epoch and AXZ both felt refreshing because of a threatening male villain who doesn't give a fuck.
You could compare the two series in a lot of ways I think. They both had a focused and enjoyable first season, but then got lost in themselves for a while before at least recapturing some of that original feeling.

Hibiki’s Injury and Kanade’s Death: This sequence serves two purposes, the first to show that Hibiki had been violently and severely injured to the point of near death without spending an episode and a half explaining it, which let them use this set up to have all the psychological aspects of Hibiki’s character in S2 and S3. In the case of Kanade, it help re-iterate the point that the Zesshou wasn’t something to just be used willy-nilly and was actually super dangerous to use, which comes into play later.
Tsubasa’s Zesshou: Building off of the sequence with Kanade’s Zesshou, this reinforced the idea that the geah using the Zesshou suffered massive physical backlash to the point of nearly killing a natural user like Tsubasa on the spot. It also allowed them to have the narrative of Tsubasa being in the hospital for at least 3 episodes, again, without having to spend an episode and a half explaining why she was in the hospital for so long, which let them spend more time developing her character.
Chris’s Torture: The shock value here goes MILES for establishing that “Hey Chris is in a really bad place”, and allows her heel-face-turn to actually be believable when confronted with someone who is genuinely reaching out who wants nothing from her (Miku).

Serena’s Zesshou: Uses the established showcase of the bleeding eyes etc. to show that Serena had used her Zesshou without actually having to go through the whole sequence, which let them use that whole emotional sequence with the song over the silent background, which let you sympathize with Maria as a character, even though she was in the role as a villain.
Hibiki’s Arm: Self-explanatory since it’s so in your face about what it establishes that even an idiot can understand it.
Maria’s Glow-In-The-Dark CIA Beatdown: Used to establish Maria’s crisis of faith, as well as the civilians reaction to her AGAIN WITHOUT SPENDING AN EPISODE AND A HALF EXPLAINING IT TO THE AUDIENCE
And then they didn’t really do any super-edgy gory shit after this because LOL NIHONPOSTERS DON’T LIKE THEIR WAIFU GETTING HURT. Every single “edgy” sequence in the entire damn anime served a point in either establishing character motivations, consequences, or tone. Absolutely NONE of it was “wanton and tone-deaf” and reducing the shock value of it would have diminished it’s effect on establishing what it was intended to establish. And as we saw with GX and AXZ, the series is lacking due to that narrative tool being taken out of their kit.

Symphogear peaked at G. Riding off the hype that was the first season. On top of the added hype of a second season for what most assumed would be a one-off show. On top of that, the animation of G was such a tremendous improvement over the first season. Both cinematography, and fight choreography was improved upon. But I feel the most important thing G did best, was how it balanced the darker tones and themes from the first season, to the action, and lighthearted moments we are now accustom to seeing from Symphogear. There was such a good contrast of slice of life moments to help build characters, action sequences to establish character motives, and then you had your darker moments to raise the tension, and get people hyped to see what would happen next. G was a roller coaster ride from beginning to end, because it always managed to hook you with new developments, then abruptly end on an enormous cliffhanger. It always managed to be unpredictable. You never quite knew what would happen next, and as a result, it always had you wanting more. The newer seasons of Symphogear are still fun to watch, but they have become more predictable. There is no sense of danger, and as a result, there is no tension to hook you into wanting to see more. I'm really hoping the next season will have Symphogear return to it's roots.

AXZ wasn't bad, and it was almost as good as S1 because it had a better base story and much better fight choreography, but it lacked both tension and nuance that could have been provided via not cutting the violence and gore, which ended up making it incredibly predictable. It would only ever be egregious if it was disconnected from the narrative. All of the bloodshed (and bystander dusting) in S1 was directly connected to establishing narrative stakes. Tsubasa's scene in particular was meant to be shocking to the audience to reflect how shocking it is to Hibiki. Toning it down for no reason would be detrimental to the storytelling. Note that when Chris sings at the end of the season, she barely jams by comparison because her fall provides the more significant image and all of the groundwork for the tension has been established previously. You could say that it could be done without showing any blood, but why would you avoid it? Avoiding gore just for the sake of avoiding gore is just as pathetic as shoveling in meaningless gore.

Imagine the following. Hibiki attemps to punch the Nephilim. The Nephilim grabs her arm with its mouth, rips it off and starts munching it while Hibiki and the others look in abject shock. Now, the Nephilim moves in and grabs Hibiki by the legs. She resists, but one of them comes off by the knee. The Nephilim pulls Hibiki closer and stomps on her remaining arm with a sickening crack to keep her from escaping. We see the Nephilim munching Hibiki's leg, bits of it, blood and saliva falling on Hibiki's face and mouth. She even accidentally swallows some of it and we get to see it. NOW, the complete shock in Hibiki's mind sends her into an animalistic rage to cope, activating berserk mode. She pulls herself out from under the monster, with her body slowly regenerating. This leads into the mystery of the relic fragment inside Hibiki's body and the rest of the plot proceeds as normal.
So, user-kun. As you can see this senseless madness is connected to the narrative. It still moves the plot forward and keeps everything nicely tied together. However, did any of my additions actually ADD to the story? Did that utter wall of edge actually ACCOMPLISH anything that couldn't have been accomplished with what G does with the scene?
All adding random gore does is appeal to edgekids and make your own story messier for no real reason. It's not avoiding gore for the sake of avoiding gore, it's avoiding gore to have a clearer story.

No one is saying that they need to go farther than G or S1, but they have completely failed to create tension because they've avoided even going that far again.
