So he blindly follows his two friends and depends on them for support and meaning as he internally wastes away. He is likely severely depressed, and his obsession with his friends’ relationship, despite them living in their own little world and ignoring his existence, is his last strand of sanity that keeps him tied to life. As a Rayfag, this was horrible to write. I don’t think the author’s intent is for Emma and Norman to be neglectful to Ray, but it certainly appears that way.

I apologize for the misunderstanding. I know that Anna is nowhere near the genius levels of the protagonists, but she is the only character he seems to have a relationship with outside Emma and Norman, which is why I pointed her out. She is barely even a character, alongside most of the other children, but I thought she was worth mentioning as an outlier.

They have moments when they're happy eating food and smiling, so it's not danger danger all the time. Those kinds of conversations could also get their minds off of things.

It looked like it was all day everyday, which makes sense because they needed to train to perfection. I'm pretty sure Isabella noticed, she just didn't do anything because she "knew" that an escape would be impossible.

But it could also create misunderstandings with the fanbase he might not want. Maybe that's why he's avoiding it.

After thinking about, I suppose the last time I even recall Ray interacting with Anna, Jemima, or Chris was during the first arc. So, I retract my statement about Ray having any deeper relationship with Anna. But the kid still needs more and better friends.

He's interacted with all of them a few times after. actually, he interacted with them the most post escape, did he even say a word to any of them before that?

And also Ray have had heartwarmming scenes with Chris and Jemima before, but never anything with Anna.

The interactions are small, obviously, but I feel like some of them just take what they can get because he hardly stands on his own anymore so any scraps go. His biggest relationships are with Emma and Norman who (unintentionally) narratively ignore him for other things and now each other so anything that's just his will make him stand out a little.
Or maybe I'm just wrong and people just want Ray to get laid.

No inner monologues, weird directorial choices, and inferior character expressions

What said. However, it's worse than that.
It's not just that they removed the inner monologues, it's that they didn't try to convey all the information in those monologues in any other way. So there goes a lot the investigation, character moments, and keikakus.
There were a lot of scenes that were robbed of its impact when animated because they were done in a very poor way. They fucked up pic related by drawing out the buildup and inserting a reverse shot of Emma looking at mama. They fucked up Krone's death in so many ways I could spend half a dozen posts ranting about it. There were a lot of tracking shots, and POV moments that didn't do anything to add tension to the scenes and just felt like padding.
And many of the strongest character moments--Emma telling Ray not to sacrifice more children, Norman's despair faces when he couldn't think of a way to save himself, etc--didn't feel the same because they lacked the detail of the manga counterpart.

TL;DR: Shit's fucked, m8.
