Since the Kodansha comics' translated edition of volume 8 is officially out on the stands as of 3 days ago, let's reread the previous together as we hope someone rips the new one.
Houseki no kuni/Land of the Lustrous volume 7 storytime
Vol 5 Vol 6
This webrip is considerably larger than the previous ones
Rock threads
This is mostly due to some pages having more shading, which unfortunately doesn't look as good as it should in the digital pages. Please bear with me as well.
Last time Fossufofiraito lost his head and the gems debated on how to get him a new one.
I'm obliged to post this in every HnK thread I come across now.
>mega.nz
Mega link to the extended ost that someone on youtube made before the channel was DMCA'd
There is the possibility that danke rips vol 8 later today, but I feel like Crang here, I don't really believe it.
Nice.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH
I LOVE PHOS!!!
Still, as I said already, some of the tracks work better in extended form (the more orchestrated ones), some are erally just "2 minutes track replayed over and over ad nauseam"
>that thousands yards stare
You can really feel the sense of generatl consternation. They might be killing two gems for what they know.
Even Jade feels bad about it.
Sometimes the neck doritos are actually visible
I really love this manga lads
Oh, it's becaue Agate is a type of Quartz. Cairn isn't as dumb as he seems.
I would've liked to see the actual moving of the bed with Phos on it
These look bad on the rip, sorry for that
There are a lot of touches that tell us he's one of the most observant gems. Technically he wouldn't be supposed to remember the legs stuff.
>Earth curvature
And now,
>Benito
Love the contrast between alien, complete isolation and cute SoL shenanigans
>image posting in a storytime thread
Dumb phossu
>m-m-m-monster kill
I still don't know why the anime made the hibernation chamber a separate building.
Also, the emphasis on the heels.
I remember the "holy shit" the first time I read this.
It's not the same bed. Most likely they either they wrapped him in a sheet and carried him there by hand, like they usually do with the broken/unconcious gems.
Why wouldn't he? Ghost was there from the beginning, he just wasn't on screen.
Imagine coming to talk to your comatose friend every day for a literal century.
Oh right, that one is Rutile's and it stays the same. My bad.
They still barely interacted before their first library meeting and while the agate pattern used to be visible, I'm not sure all the gems are familiar with those minerals.
Phos is phat, so probably they got the diamonds to carry him.
I love Red's faces.
How would you do the suspenceful feeling of the gems who don't really know WHO woke up?
Do you have Tomoyo Kurosawa start with a different voice and then go back to genki Phos? Do you start with Lapis and then change it?
Well, they address him as Phos here so it should probably be serious Kumiko.
The absolute dumbass.
>Craig's face
Headpats.
I think nuGoshe is here
>Phos said want to be more like Parappa
>slept for a hundred years
Pottery
Imagine how disturbing it must feel to have a friend of yours literally wearing the face of another dead friend.
I think the face Phos makes here is supposed to parallel this.
And now, to a familar sequence.
>oh no he's retarded
god he's sexy
It's more likely than you think, if your dead friend had siblings.
twins are 2spooky4me
>one of the only bits of outright praise Phos gets is when they're not even conscious or present for it
>You do have some sense in your style of thinking.
>It's time
Lapis is homosex = confirmed
I like how the ripped seams look
>hugging the pillow
As I said, confirmed homo.
>I really liked that frilly stuff but I would never say anything about it
Once again the anime could do this much better by improving the framerate.
Volume 8's omake is literally about it.
I would have liked to see a couple more chapters before the awakening
Scoot scoot
>Breakdown in personality
Hahahahaha
And I would like the manga to be weekly and include more explanations and slice of life scenes but I can admit that Ichikawa has her own idea and it's been mostly good.
What would a Phosless chapter set then even include?
Also the Morga and Goshe reveal works better if we see it through Phos's eyes.
Maybe it could be something like the last minutes of the anime -gems doing their usual stuff with very little changes, stuck in an eternal loop.
Fergot me lightah
It was interesting to see Cairngorm's reactions to various subjects pre moon versus what they talk about later, though
Library science is serious stuff.
>yfw there's a "Lapis" system akin to Dewey
Very. I like that there's still room to think that something's going on without the manipulation being 100% bullshit
Red Beryl is happy to oblige.
I joke about being mad about ponytail LaPhos, but I really am mad.
That said, GosheN is one of the least retarded TL choices -it's just there so murrifats don't read it as go-she.
We're all in agreement that nuGoshe should get Morga's voice and nuMorga should get Goshe's voice, right?
Wouldn't they just read it as go-shen if they were already going to misread it like that?
"She" reads with a phonetic /i/, while "shen" reads with something closer to a phonetic /e/, plus Goshen is a real place that reads like that.
I mean, Goshenite is named like that after the IRL Goshen.
Hell, I never noticed that the first panel is obvious foreshadowing for the subsequent dream, I guess rereads really are of help.
I guess Morga and Goshe's replacement is in a way a manner of keeping Phos as the 28th and 'last' gem.
Morga-chan is cute! CUTE!
F Goshe and Morga.
Also nice to see that the gems' emotional support system works as well as we used to see since nuMorga had to ask a literal who if his existence was justified
>not colored
Whoever was behind this should be send to the moonies in a box
This looks really bad in black and white with the retarded shading.
Rip long hair Phos.
I know. Let's have a comparison.
Following from since it's not like we're losing some big dialogue
Now back to Kodansha
In case you forgot nuGoshe is not-so-secretly a psycho
I only just realized that nuGoshe was making child-like sword noises
>everyone counting on Phos after all these years
Nice.
>Hemi wants to protect Melon
>Melon is always the one who gets to call Sensei
I want to run trains on Morga-chans inexperienced gemhole, handling her like the 100lb gemlet she is.
He probably wouldn't notice if he didn't take Bortz's advice in as well
I wanted to dick those twins so hard, until I realized they're pretty small and cervix pushin' isn't very fun.
I really don't know the first things about beryl's weights but please don't lewd Morga-chan.
Ichikawa'd.
Craig was foreseeing another decapitation wasn't he?
Did they really have to fancy up the words by making it 'Sensei's soliloquy' instead of just 'the word sensei accidentally said'? Just makes it sound confusing.
>plz no lewd
How about Phossu?
I have a thing for Yiz especially.
What will NuGoshe's role be in th sea arc?
>yet ANOTHER search for Phos's pieces
the state of this gem
I'm not even sure of the reference.
Is it what he said when Phos discovered he breaks little pieces of himself?
That's the kind of stuff that makes you end up on the moon. Is it really worth it?
Ironically, Melon has OP biribiri powers, and would probably fare better.
In case you forgot Ichikawa likes to draw marine life.
Technically Hemimorphite has them too and it's probably the reason why they're paired. It seems to be a character trait.
I don't remember specifically either, but it was probably a reference to any of the times that he accidentally said something that made him look suspicious, like when he says "Shiro, what happened to your hand?"
They do that a lot. Sometimes Phos also speaks uncharacteristically eloquently in these translations.
IRL tourmaline and hemimorphite of course exhibit zappy powers only under extreme pressure or temperature.
Oh right, that must be it. If that's it it sort of works as an identifier too.
I think it makes sense to render the times when he's trying to beg, like when he asks Yellow to partner up when he gets the new legs.
That everyone absolutely forget about the whole deal is a nice window about the life of a functionally immortal gem.
The last panel kills me everytime.
>forgetting about oppai
Shame on you
Shinsha returns!
The implication is that Shinsha already knew about the head transplant
JUST FUCK ALREADY
Observe.
*ahem*
>conveniently omits Phos's words or that he dragged him to the school
>I agree.
So he really retained something about the encyclopedia?
I want to wait until everyone was out on patrol dealing with a sunspot to enter the library.
I'll find LaPhos arranging books and sneak up to her admiring the slender form from behind.
I'll drag her to the ground and she tries to cushion her fall but with my added weight her arms will snap off at the elbow.
I want to tie her weak broken arms behind her back then slowly and sensually cut open her uniform, exposing the small of her back and shapely behind.
I want to gag her with the torn pieces of her uniform as my fingers massage her upper back and slowly work downward trailing to the gap between her thighs. And staying there, moving faster and pressing harder.
As i slow down phos is panting through the gag, chipped face pressed against the marble floor. And i unsheath my adamantine member, it presses against her entrance until i realize I'll never have phossu as a waifu whom i would ravage nightly.
Fugg.
>entrance
No such thing.
Comedy gold. You can literally pinpoint what's Lapis and what's Phos in this volume.
my chinese comics say otherwise
Oh, that's the same gems who were present then.
>This friendly doctor is now a murderous psychopath
The 1 year and a half from then (minutes the 102 years) also confirms the seasonal changes
Cute outfits.
>doctor
He's only more of a quack today.
>My... Lapis'
It's settling in.
HOLD THE PHONE that loli jellyfish is coming up. SHE HAS HOLES haha storytime user IF IT HAS HOLES THERE IS NAUGHT THAT WILL STOP ME
The outfits also basically confirm that the babies don't really go on patrol as everyone else.
>nothing really confirmed Variegatus' gender
>has tentacles
>is just a blob of fleshy stuff
>probably lays eggs through an ovipositor
I'd be wary of slug sex if I were you user
Did the ships even fully disperse?
>is that lettuce on her face, were they even trying?
So he was merely pretending to be fully asleep.
>that dialogue
Ironic.
Morga and Goshe stayed behind.
>Bortz values Phos's insight
You could maybe boobytrap its hoohaa but that would only stop me once.
My point was that you set out to rape but could end up being the raped.
>hakase
Doctor isn't really a bad translation per se tbqh
I imagine that if Laphos wasn't trying to gain the upper hand on Sensei here, he could've set out to preserve and study the professor.
I think that the absence of lotus root-like holes tells us that they really tried this time
The carpet dissolved as well, hence the gems' surprise at seeing Phos' outfit stay on.
I guess the multiple layers are supposed to recall how a pearl is made, maybe?
>things I knew
That was new info though
>all the gems got there
oh good point. I dont have the equipment for that.
The way he says it makes me think that he could be talking about Lapis or Ghost themselves.
Ah yes, a powerful ruler.
Imagine the dim bioluminescence.
Well, Phos told Chaingun about the ice floes but I'm not sure he really knows about the slugs.
So their legends have split the character of Phos into two?
>hurr durr why don't you patch up paddy's holes with hair
Rare Aleki.
It's a meme you dip
>tfw the legends came true
Well, if each gem's cleavage was visible some of them would look a little too freaky.
I take the "now I feel bad" line as Phos actually getting some memory back
There's an obvious parallel to genki Phos and Ventricosus here
So they stayed up all night trying to remember the old tale. Also SEA ARC soon™
Oh, I didn't know that.
>temperature
Well, if the speculation that gems getting emotional heats up inclusions, it explains why Melon only gets zappy when agitated or angry.
>jaws music intensifies
AWWWW HELL YEAH I TIME TO GET SLIPPERY WITH THE SLUGS
IM FULL MAST BABY LET GO!!!!
I'm reading the "I'm successful" in Chaika's voice.
I CANT TAKE IT ANY LONGER IM GONNA BLOW
>The sea arc is actually the slugs invading the moon
GOOD LORD STRIKE ME DOWN
>full mast
Oh, is that supposed to be it, user-kun? It's barely visible then, you should be embarassed.
What are those water jugs on her chest?
I'm quite developed for my age I'll have you know.
Doesn't manga Ventricosus have some yellow in her design?
>the "genius"
I swear if this is just another way to avoid saying "he"
We know from tiny things mentioned here and there that Phos, probably while helping Craig arrange the library, learned a lot about animals and their classifications. We also know that he has memorised every occurence of Lunarian ships.
I think the latest chapter's sequence of Sensei walking down the alley and bringing light might be a callback to this sequence
That was also before he lost his head.
>can freely say ningen
>always chooses not to
I think this is entirely consistent through the series
Last chapter for today since vol 8 rip never!
Featuring two cute dorks that can't even say they like each other.
>Is that all?
>doesn't answer
It should be
>so...
rather than
>so?
The
>そう言いたいだけどさ...
construction will never not be wooden as fuck in translation
It seems that Lapis didn't help with relationship advice.
>I suddenly can't understand words
I still don't get if Shinsha's remark in chapter 61 "so you did hear then" is meant to be taken as his impression or what really happened.
I wonder what the forceful way was.
That's good character work.
>Kill
did he actually say this?
One of the quotes that could summarize Phos's character.
Let me finish this and I'll post the original page.
>be moonie soldier
>just a day like any other
>on mission just like endless times before
>random gem makes gold clones of you
I mean, this shit has to be at least entertaining.
>is this bitch serious?
Unless this was the peaceful/forceful stuff
Ichikawa redrew this in the volume release.
Now I see why the moonies were so excited next chapter. The gold clones, the prized green gem, the drama, the betrayal.
Is this telepathy?
It looked a bit too much like future Karen there. Also Crinklegem never really used a sword, didn't he?
>sickle
>saw
>vajra
Off we go.
Poor Zircon.
All the little reactions.
Sensei looks especially Buddha-like here.
>rapeanon starts posting in the thread
This would probably have been better than what the moonies revealed themselves to be
Anyway this is the way volume 7 ends, hope you enjoyed.
Volume 8 rip soon, r-right?
Omake, featuring
>Benito
As always, feel free to do whatever with this thread, but but the original manga if you like it. Buying the blu-ray would probably help raising attention for a second season of the anime.
thank mr storyposter
may your inclusions be strong and your cleavage perfect
I want to tease Phos by sneaking up on her and whispering "sensei" in her ear. She is very cute when she shatters.
Thank you dump user, read vol 6 yesterday in your last thread, hope vol 7 will just be as depressing
>Kill moonies and take over their ships
Oh, thanks.
I dislike the rearrangement of the sentences. The bad translation sounded way better with
>And I kinda want to see how far
>I can go
Same thing with the Lapis Lazuli chapter being rearranged to not end on Cairn saying "Lapis Lazuli". It takes away the impact.
Those are her most important assets.
Thank you for the dump!
Here it is, it's not like I totally forgot to make lunch
Were other volumes also dumped here on Yea Forums?
No, just 5, 6 and 7 -the OP literally says it's to catch up in hopes of getting volume 8.
Volumes 1 to 4 have a nearly 1 to 1 adaptation in the anime though.
am I rapeanon or is there another rapeguy I don't know about
It's like
my brethren. I can only hope to be as great as him eventually.
>one piece of the puzzle almost got resolved here
>got interrupted by pajamas
Anyone who can read nip? Does he say "kill" or "cut down"?
He says "cut down" (斬って) and then "break apart/destroy" (壊す)
Thanks. And FUCK these translations. The fact that the gems aren't familiar with the concept of murder is a literal plot point.
The common theme about Sensei’s function he doesn’t work for parts of the humans that were split. My thinking is that the same programming preventing Sensei from disclosing information regarding Shiro and Prof is the very same that prevented him from praying for the Lunarians, even if Phos did pass the human authentication in the latest chapter. Presumably both these functions can only be invoked by a human.
What this would also mean, however, is that now Phos can actually make Kongo talk about Shiro and Prof, to get an understanding of Lunarians’ motivations and their involvement in Kongo’s history.
Something interesting I noticed here is that the lunarians dropped Cairngorm in purpose. They could as well incapacitated and took him along with Phos but they were probably explicitly ordered by Aechmea not to touch him.
oh didn't know the anime is so faithfull, more gemu battsu
Who did the translation for the ones in the thread?
Dumb typos
>[...] Sensei’s function *is that* he doesn’t work [...]
>[...] dropped Cairngorm on* purpose [...]
Also I’m highly convinced that Euclase knew about the first part too, maybe since during the first raid or even shortly before that, seeing as he considers Phos to be crucial to the future of gemkind.
The official english publisher's team.
Well that's a bit disheartening
>Finely powdered rutile is a brilliant white pigment and is used in paints,
Do we know where the powder the gems use comes from?
Plants
A powdered seed iirc, one of Phos' first jobs is to collect seeds while on patrol
>translators are twins
Neat.png
What?
A bit more about the Kodansha translations: pic related here is the team behind it.
Speaking as someone who's a bit familar with editing and is friends with people in actual manga editing, I can cut some bit of slack in some areas. For instance, the TL actually dropped most of the excessive American colloquialisms in the first couple of volumes and most of the 'lustrous' stuff and got slightly better typesetting.
You have to remember that the people who do this for a job are considerably less attentive than we fans are about the general lore and the implications of specific Japanese wordings, since they're attached to multiple series that come out once every few months: most of the times the 'proofreading' part of the editing is done by no-names interns with zero understanding of Japanese. It sucks, but it's the case with nearly every publishing house for manga.
Unfortunately, the official edition is saddled with some of the errors in the first volumes, needing to avoid Problematic™ stuff, and some of the weight of failed editing.
So you have stuff like
>Kongo-sensei (the reasoning probably being that he looks like a Buddhist monk so sensei is fine and 'master' is problematic™, but that carried over the untranslated name when Adamant is 100% fine)
>opposite color
>Phos saying "I'll fix your KIMONO" in vol 3 when kimono just translates as clothes and Sensei's kasaya sure isn't a kimono just because it's Japanese clothing or this volume's 'kill it' which would be a fine emphatic sinonymous for 'strike it down' given the situation except gems in general aren't familiar with the concept of killing
Well, they are.
The translators for the viz volumes are twins.
Huh, that's kinda cute I guess.
>Naming your twins Alethea and Athena
I hate it
>that foreshadowing
>tfw phos actually heard shinsha
Phos really likes using that "You're necessary to me" incentive
In volume 8 they also translated 'shiro' as 'immaculate'.
> this was definitely not a shortcut
it's been a while since I caught up, what does thi refer to again.
this is why Phos have the long neck?
they thought giving phos Lapis' head would be faster than waiting for new material that phos can use for a head
which gem has tried to discover the truth before Phos?
The previous chapter (where Phos lost his head) is called 'shortcut'. It starts with with Phos trying to walk on ice as a shortcut to get to the beach. As a result, Crankygum damages his arm. When the arm falls off in the following fight against the moonies, Phos gets decapitated in order to retrieve it. In the end, Cairo suggests this So there's a bit of pottery behind that.
That's just bad. GEE IT SURE WOULD BE NICE IF SOMEONE RIPPED THE VOLUME FOR EVERYONE TO DISCUSS
I don't know how to rip it in high quality, user. It'll be uploaded on nyaa in a couple of days anyway.
truly the worst timeline
None of the English volumes have ever been ripped by anons or showed up on sharing sites first. It's always been named, "professional" rippers, namely danke in houseki's case. These threads are basically a way of signaling him.
Not that it wouldn't be really nice if someone else did it for once.
How do you go BACK on a good translation? Jesus.
I know you're joking, but no. Rutile adjusted the length of the neck by shaving off some of the edge of Lapis' neck, so that it would fit Phos' neck perfectly.
The real reason is because Ichikawa keeps changing how she draws the gems. The necks have been shorter recently.
Lapis, we know of for sure. It's not unrealistic to think that there might have been some before too.
Thank you for the insight, user. That's very unfortunate, the series deserves better.
And if what you said is true, then I am very disappointed as someone who performs professional translation for a living as I am not convinced that they couldn't have done a better job. There's clearly a problem when neither the translator(s), reviewer(s) or project manager(s) picks up on errors, especially when it comes to creative translation.
It's possible the translators severely underpaid or overworked (at which point you do start thinking "fuck it"), but that would be the fault of the publisher, and it's not excuse to lower the output quality if you got caught up in that situation in the first place.
But if this is the result of all of the above parties doing their best, then they should've picked someone else for the job.
>You have to remember that the people who do this for a job are considerably less attentive than we fans are about the general lore and the implications of specific Japanese wordings
If this is the case, there are definitely better people out there.
I'm surprised they do not suspect Euclase since, after all, it's one of the most intelligent gems.
Morga and Goshe are probably my favorite minor characters, so this part always gets to me. Just wish they weren't basically completely dropped after the first few chapters.
I also want to know how NuMorga is doing now, with their senpai having turned traitor and their partner leaving without a word.
NuMorga is cute! CUTE!
Wait, don't get me wrong: I never said the translations couldn't be better or that the mistakes are too unimportant to care about.
I merely stated that some choices are very likely forced by the overseeing editor team because the series appeals to the tumblr crowd and they don't want to rail them up for whatever retarded reason (hence the "sensei" instead of master, "opposite color" instead of black, and "that gem" instead of 'he' or whatever pronoun) and secondly I see people being a bit too hard on the translation team because they're used to fantranlators, which 1. are fans 2. have to deal with a single chapter a time, and in shorter intervals 3. can go back on their own translations when it turns out they weren't on point, which happens all the time.
Meant to release this yesterday, but here you go.
>Land of the Lustrous v08 (2019) (Digital) (danke-Empire)

mega.nz
I hope it didn't look like I was nagging.
Thank you a lot for doing this.
THREAD SOON NERDS
Take note of how happy go lucky Phos still is at this point. Everything really goes downhill after she went to the moon.
THANK YOU!
I agree audiences can be nit-picky, sometimes to the point of injustice, that really just comes with the territory. If the translators are proper professionals, they'll be fine. If anything, it's marginally helpful for them to better assess whether their direction is right or not, and ignore if it's the former.
However,
>because they're used to fantranlators, which 1. are fans 2. have to deal with a single chapter a time, and in shorter intervals 3. can go back on their own translations when it turns out they weren't on point, which happens all the time.
these aren't really valid excuses. 1) If you're a fan of something, it's a bonus, not something that should detract from your optimal performance when it's not, 2) having batches and longer intervals is helpful moreso than shredded issues, and 3) that's part of the job!
That said, the current translation team got 90+% right, so I have little to complain. However, as a passionate fan, I would've liked a team who can do 99% right, which I know exists and can exist.
These pages never fail to frustrate me. Phos you dense dumbass.
I miss pre-tranny Phos
All Phos are Best Phos!
