I think it was done as a response because the rival character was a tsundere with big breasts, and she had the same color, long hair, and eye color as a certain tsundere from To Love Ru, so she changed it halfway.

Franchise should've had the decency to end in 1995.

I like the stylization of the left, but the skills have improved by a longshot. It looks a lot nicer.

Azumanga Daioh was even faster. The characters are barely even recoginsable as the same ones when comparing start and end of vol1. And then it keeps slowly evolving through the rest of it too.

Considering 95 was pretty much retirement for him from art it's not awful. especially his concept arts for recent projects. 2004 though, that digital coloring is painful. Glad we are mostly away from the era of seeing oldschool mangakas struggling with digital coloring.

It's like they realized you don't have to necesarily use the default photoshop brushes like 15 years after the rest of the world.

The problem isn't the photoshop brushes, Most professional artists , especially in anime, use the default round brush.
The problem is things like differences in the workflow, process, tools, etc, as well as lack of understanding of the capabilities of the tools. If you don't understand what the tool can produce you might think that your sub par results are the tools result.

Honestly 90's and a bit of 2000s nagai makes me feel conflicted.
Monster designs still looked nice. So did mechanical detail. So was colour, Lady's hell arc looked 10/10 enviroment wise, gore was still the shit same we all loved from devilman or violence jack. But then the faces and sometimes the human bodies just look weird.

That's no way to think. Saying anyone can do well if they're motivated enough, and then immidiately saying you'll do it "later, once there's time" is literally the opposite of having that motivation. If you ever want to actually get good, then start drawing tomorrow (or today even). Even if it's just quick doodles in between other stuff it's better than nothing, and then when you do finally have more time you'll have some sort of a foundation to work on. Trust me, if you end up getting hooked to drawing you'll be lamenting all the time you wasted in life doing other stuff when you realize how much better you could be at it if you had just started even a little bit earlier.

That's because it originally started out as a weekly manga then later went monthly in the second series.

I mean that middle panel is from the end of the first series, and the artstyle had already gotten dozens of times better than it was at the start. I think that while going monthly certainly allowed the mangaka to put more care and detail into the art, it doesn't make me any less impressed to see how much he improved on a fundamental level.

By the third chapter he already changed the artstyle a bit

Tokyo Ghoul and AoT are the only two mango's I've read where the art goes from bad to good over the course of the series. Most of the time the art just changes while remaining consistently good (JoJo/DB) or bad (One Piece) or the art just gets worse (Bleach, Berserk).
