In addition to that, another theme remains in the foreground showcasing wisdom and foresight over youth and infatuation. As it goes, "only fools rush in". The boy sees only the woman and the happiness when they are together - not beyond.

Though it was difficult for her, she chose the lesser of 2 evils - be unhappy and miserable for awhile, but grant the boy the opportunity to see that there is more to life than just her and the garden, rather than risk everything (her career, his future, etc.) in what may only be as momentary as the rain.

At least, that's how I viewed it.
